Hi everyone! Today I am going to share a post about a poster colour painting that I did. I painted a Coffee Shop storefront in bright colours. It was fun to paint this and I enjoyed it. I also tested my new water container that I got specially for watercolour and poster colour artworks. My inspiration for this type of artwork is Mateusz Urbanowicz. He is an artist and has done many storefront paintings. I took inspiration from his artworks as they're mostly in bright colours and have a cheerful vibe.
Tools and Materials
- Buncho Poster Colour
- An artblock paper
- A HB pencil
- Eraser
- Water
- Palette
- Container for water to clean brush
- Mala small round brush
- Tissue to absorb excess water
Method
This is my drawing of the shop in pencil. It is quite simple and I added some plants on the sides to fill some of the space.
Then, I drew over the pencil outlines using a black gel pen to create a more prominent drawing, I left out the word on top because I wanted to use white pen for that.
This is my art space where I paint and do other artsy things as well. That is my new water container. it is made for drinks but it was cheap and came with a handle like I wanted so I got it for art. As you can see, I have already erased the pencil words of Coffee on the shop name board.
I started my painting with yellow because it is the lightest colour I need. This paper is of medium quality and it wasn't bad as it could take a reasonable amount of water as you can see in the picture above.
Then, I painted other colours but they appear muted as this is the first layer.
Here I tried to add some shading with other darker toned colours with higher colour values. It doesn't look good at the moment :D
I created some brownstone bricks pattern on the front wall of the shop. I tried to incorporate different brownish tones. I just added tints of purple, red and orange to the brown to create these colours.
It is time for the board. I planned a red sign board but I changed my mind and chose a fuchsia vibrant pink instead.
Here I have painted almost all the white parts including the top sign board of the shop. I used the fuchsia colour I mixed for this.
Next, I also added some details on the background areas. I also added another colour to the roof. It looks a little contrasting but I thought the yellow and blue will make a nice combination for creating highlights and shadows as roofs have uneven surfaces.
I added more layers of colours on some parts to make them more vibrant. I also painted a layer of fuchsia in the middle of the sign board in the shape of a box.
Here's a closer look of that. I wanted to create a neon board like we see on the streets at night. The painting was coming together but then I noticed some parts where I accidentally painted outside the drawing like you can see on the right side in the picture above.
Tada!!! I casted a spell and now the drawing has cleaner look :D Hehe I am just kidding. I just used some water and a clean brush to lift the excess paint off. So, in other words, I painted water over the regions that need lifting to remove the colour so now the edges look better and not too messy.
Finally, I wrote coffee on the top sign board of the shop. I had some space left on the right so I went ahead and drew a cup of coffee. I chose to use white so it looks a little different and the fuchsia colour will still stand out with a subtle neon look. There it is, my very first storefront painting! I am going to make many more in the future.
