Hi everyone! So recently I went on a short trip to a place called Bagan Datoh, Perak, Malaysia. It is actually a small town away from the city. The weather over there was different and a lot warmer than Kuala Lumpur which is where I live. So. my family and I decided that it was time to have a cooling dessert. We visited a small shop nearby.
This is how the shop looks like. It was quite small but there were a few tables for customers to sit and enjoy their desserts. While sitting, we can actually watch how the cendol or ABC is being made as all the machine and tools are right there. Although it was a small shop, it was clean and the owner was very welcoming. By the way, we found out later on that the owner was actually my aunty's classmate and friend. What a small world.
This is the menu. See how affordable the prices are! The Malay words in red imply that the shop was actually in Klang initially and then moved here. The owner shared some of his story about how it happened. Now back to the menu, as you can see most of the popular local desserts are available here. My favourite items are the ABC, cendol and the laici kang.
This is cendol. It is what my mom ordered. By the way, the seller asked us what kind of sweetener we prefer before preparing our dessert. We picked palm sugar (gula melaka). Cendol generally contains ice, a variety of beans and sometimes even certain fruits. Also, of course no cendol is complete without the green worm-like items which are jellies made of rice flour with pandan flavour.
This is rojak and it is what my father ordered. It is consists of fruits and vegetables so it is salad in the local style. It also comes with a dressing that tastes both sweet and spicy. Now, this may sound a little un-Malaysian but I am not a fan of rojak so I didn't even try it. The rest of my family did and they said it tasted good.
This is my brother's ABC. ABC means Air Batu Campur which means mixed ice. Of course it is not made of shaved ice alone but actually consists of other yummy items such as fruits and different types of nuts and beans.
This is my ABC. See how many slices of fruits I got on top. It was pineapple slices. The seller added some extras because he was very happy to see us as it was actually our second visit and we told him where we were coming from. It was kind and generous of him to do so.

So we had our dessert there and it was perfect for the hot weather. Check out how the buildings outside were painted in a colourful way. It was in my style just like how I would use a ton of colours in my artworks :D
