Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.
–Ralph Waldo Emerson
Have you ever been in a position where you just feel like giving up? Nothing really matters at all? You just want to drop face down on your bed and remain that way for as long as possible? I've been there many times.
There are two ways to go about such a situation:
- First; you remain on your bed for eternity cursing your "misfortune" under your breath.
- Second, you actually get up and do something about it.
This decision is totally up to you.
My mother is one of those parents that sends random motivational videos to me. At first, I didn't really pay so much attention to the videos because most of them had a duration of seven minutes and above. On one of the days I was desperately looking for something to motivate me, I went on to watch a recent video she had sent.
The video featured a man with no arms, just tiny legs, addressing a crowd with thousands of people with arms and legs. From his speech , he was born that way but he didn't let his physique hinder his progress. After about five minutes of listening to this man(Nicolas James vujicic), it felt like scales had dropped out of my eyes. The motivation I was looking for most certainly came.
Determination is one of the attributes I grew up with and sometimes my determination scares me. I'm the type of person to reach for the skies if I put my mind to it. Sometimes I wonder, is that a good or bad thing?
It depends on you.
If you fix your mind to achieve a wrong deed, then your determination is being used in the wrong way and vice versa. I tell you a short story.
Few years back, I decided to delve fully into giving the little services I could give in church. Ranging from ushering to time keeping and even MC-ing sometimes. I obviously had to go through a series of training before I could take up any of these activities. Believe me when I say that the MC training was the one that required the most determination.
As an MC, you need to have a good sense of humour and also know how to work a crowd. Your vocals shouldn't be found shaking at any point in time and yati yada. Anyone would easily give up on the first week of training.
After my training, it was my first time to go on stage. In the backstage, a few minutes before my performance one of the ladies who specialises in discriminating against others walked up to me and began saying lots of things.
"Wongi, you're the MC for today?hmmm. Are you sure you'd be able to do it? Why is your dress like this? Your shoes are ….." all her words were basically feeding more doubt into my mind. It was a mixture of doubt and anxiety. My determination level had been reduced from 80% to 30% at this point. I looked at the wall clock and it was time for me to perform.
I walked in boldly, smiled beautifully at the crowd and then spoke into the microphone. I don't know where the courage came from but what I do know is that I heard a roaring round of applause after I introduced myself as the master of ceremonies for the day. The rest of the service went just fine.
Truth remains that, once you've made up your mind to do something, then you're 40% through it . People may pass terrible comments but your decision to remain unwavering matters a whole lot. If I was busy thinking about how my dress looked or how my voice sounded, I wouldn't have had the time to get my act right. Instead of talking on stage, I would have been wondering what the crowd had to say about my dress. That wouldn't have helped one bit.
I'd like to wrap up this article with the popular quote by Benjamin Franklin; "you can do anything you set your mind to". Irrespective of how tough or how tactful the issue is, you can do it if you set your mind to it.
Thank you so much for reading

Yo he estado ahí muchas veces.
