The safe was locked and no matter which combination he tried it remained that way. He knew there should be a key, actually three, for cases like these, those very rare moments he couldn't remember the code.
"Stupid code," he grumbled while he kicked the locker, "stupid modern invention!"
He should have never bought it but had insisted on it. It was a good quality item and he was glad she didn't know what he intended to hide inside. At that time he felt, thought it was a great idea to throw the keys away.
"My remembrance is great even better as an elephant his memory," he had bragged, "you know me, I never forget anything."
He remembered well how she had shrugged and had had a certain expression on her face. It was the same look she gave him now while he tried to open the safe-deposit box and as he kicked it she shrugged again. No, she didn't say "I told you so," but he felt that was exactly what she thought. To her, the safe was a waste of money, the money needed for food.
He felt her unspoken words and as she turned around with the intention to leave him behind with the miserable cabinet with the stubborn complex lock he grabbed the stool and hit her on her head. With a soft click, the safe opened, just in time.
