Then, I used to think big grammar was wisdom.
In my early university days in unical, when I wanted to impress people, I would speak big English.
Long sentences.
Complicated words.
Words I myself needed a dictionary to understand them.
I thought if I spoke like that, people would say this guy is intelligent 馃. Like one senator Patrick ogbayiabom a one time senator from Nigeria.
But I was wrong.
People were not hearing me.
They were just hearing noise.
One day, a friend told me the bitter truth after I finished giving a long speech in a departmental meeting.
He said, bro, you spoke for 10 minutes and said nothing.
That day pained me, but it changed me.
I learned the most powerful lesson in communication.
If people don't understand you, you didn't communicate.
You only made noise.
Since then, I chose simplicity.
And simplicity has opened more doors for me than big grammar ever did.
WHAT SIMPLICITY IN COMMUNICATION MEANS TO ME
It does not mean I don't know big words.
It means I choose small words that carry big meaning.
It does not mean I am not intelligent.
It means I am intelligent enough to make a market woman, a professor, and a 10-year-old child understand the same message.
Simple communication is not about speaking down to people.
It is about bringing people up to your idea.
WHY I NOW CHOOSE SIMPLICITY.
Simple is fast. Life is fast.
We live in a world where people's attention is ten seconds. If you need six minutes to explain one point, you have lost them. Simplicity respects people's time.Simple is clear. Clarity is power.
Confused people don't buy.
Confused people don't follow.
Confused people don't trust.
When I say exactly what I mean in plain words, people trust me.
In business, in friendship, in relationship, clarity wins.Simple is memorable.
People don't remember your big grammar. They remember your simple truth.
No life, no win. We came with nothing, we go with nothing.
These are simple lines but they stay in the head forever.
HOW I PRACTICE SIMPLICITY EVERY DAY.
I use short sentences. If one long sentence can be broken into two short ones, I break it.
My teacher in primary school was right.
Full stop is your friend.I use real life examples. I don't explain with theories from America. I explain with what we see in Akwa Ibom, in the market, in the bus, in the church, in the street.
Remember that people understand their own life.I listen twice, I speak once.
Before I was always ready to talk.
Now I am ready to listen.
Because simple communication is not only about talking simple, it's about understanding people first.I remove the noise words.
Words like basically, actually, to be honest, in other words, most times we don't need them.
I go straight to the point.I speak from my heart, not from my head alone.
When you speak from the heart, your words become simple automatically. The heart does not know how to form big grammar.
It only knows truth.
This is my competitive edge.
In a world where everybody wants to sound big, I want to be understood.
I don't want people to clap for my English. I want people to say I understand, and I will act on it.
Because at the end of the day, communication is not about sounding smart.
It's about making someone else smarter, better, or clearer after hearing you.
That is my skill. That is my choice.
Simplicity.
Not because I cannot be complex, but because I choose to be clear.
