When we hear the words “extraterrestrial beings,” we usually think about distant planets, spaceships, and civilizations somewhere beyond the stars.
But what if the real mystery were not what comes from outer space?
What if the strange thing were actually ourselves?
That question came to mind while reading Extraterrestrial Legends, by German writer Anna Seghers.
This book brings together three stories that approach the fantastic from very different directions.
The first deals directly with the possibility of extraterrestrial beings visiting our planet.
The second takes the reader into the disturbing territory of guilt and conscience.
And the third imagines an extraordinary literary encounter between three writers who never actually met: E. T. A. Hoffmann, Nikolai Gogol, and Franz Kafka.
The variety of these stories is what makes the book particularly interesting.
Anna Seghers does not use the fantastic simply to escape from reality.
She uses it to look at reality from another angle.
Sometimes we need something impossible to reveal something painfully real.
The title story, Extraterrestrial Legends, takes us into the fascinating world of speculation bordering on science fiction.
The idea of beings from another world visiting Earth is, on the surface, a classic fantastic premise.
But behind it lies a much older human question:
What would happen if we were suddenly confronted with something completely outside our experience?
Would we be curious?
Afraid?
Or would we simply interpret the unknown according to our own limitations?
The second story, The Place of the Meeting, moves in a completely different direction.
Here, the fantastic becomes connected with guilt.
A human being tries to escape the remorse caused by a mission that was not fulfilled because of his own cowardice.
The story takes that feeling to an extreme, almost surreal dimension.
And perhaps that is what makes it disturbing: there are things from which we can run, but not necessarily things from which we can escape.
The third story, Encounter During a Journey, is perhaps the most intriguing from a literary perspective.
Seghers imagines Hoffmann, Gogol, and Kafka meeting in a café in Prague.
They talk about their encounters with authoritarian regimes and about their literary works.
It never happened.
And precisely because it never happened, the story becomes an imaginative space where three very different literary voices can be brought together.
There is something fascinating about that idea.
Literature can create conversations that history never allowed to happen.
It can place people from different periods around the same table and make them discuss the questions that connect their works.
In this case, the fantastic is not merely about aliens.
It becomes a way of crossing time itself.
As is customary, I would like to share a reflection inspired by the spirit of the book:
“Sometimes we invent worlds beyond our own because our own world is not enough to explain what we feel.”
That thought seems particularly appropriate for Extraterrestrial Legends.
The three stories are very different, but they share something important.
They use the extraordinary to examine human beings.
Our fear of the unknown.
Our guilt.
Our courage and cowardice.
Our relationship with power.
And our need to give meaning to the world around us.
Anna Seghers was one of the most important German writers of the twentieth century.
Her literary career was deeply marked by the political upheavals of Europe and by the experience of exile.
The Cuban edition also presents her as a prominent figure in the literary life of the German Democratic Republic, or GDR, where she served as president of the Writers' Union.
The edition I have in my hands was published in Cuba by Arte y Literatura in 1982.
The editorial work was carried out by Kvieta Sedlákova, proofreading was done by Rafaela Rodríguez and Maritza Vázquez, and the cover was designed by Carlos Rubido.
I find older Cuban editions especially interesting because they often brought international authors and works to readers who might otherwise have had very limited access to them.
Holding this book today means not only reading Anna Seghers, but also encountering a small piece of that publishing history.
As in previous posts, I share photos of my physical copy.
And this particular book deserves to be photographed alongside its pages.
It is one of those volumes whose title immediately creates curiosity, but whose contents turn out to be much broader than the title suggests.
There are extraterrestrials, yes.
But there are also guilt, conscience, literature, fear, imagination, and the difficult relationship between human beings and power.
Reading Extraterrestrial Legends today leaves an interesting impression.
Perhaps the most important thing about fantastic literature is not that it takes us away from reality.
Sometimes it does exactly the opposite.
It brings us back to reality with different eyes.

Cuando escuchamos las palabras “seres extraterrestres”, normalmente pensamos en planetas lejanos, naves espaciales y civilizaciones situadas en algún lugar más allá de las estrellas.
Pero ¿y si el verdadero misterio no fuera aquello que viene del espacio exterior?
¿Y si lo extraño estuviera realmente dentro de nosotros mismos?
Esa pregunta me vino a la mente mientras leía Leyendas extraterrestres, de la escritora alemana Anna Seghers.
Este libro reúne tres relatos que se acercan a lo fantástico desde caminos muy diferentes.
El primero aborda directamente la posibilidad de una visita de seres extraterrestres a nuestro planeta.
El segundo lleva al lector hacia el inquietante territorio de la culpa y la conciencia.
Y el tercero imagina un encuentro literario extraordinario entre tres escritores que nunca llegaron a conocerse: E. T. A. Hoffmann, Nikolái Gógol y Franz Kafka.
La variedad de estos relatos es precisamente uno de los aspectos que más me interesaron.
Anna Seghers no utiliza lo fantástico simplemente para escapar de la realidad.
Lo utiliza para observarla desde otro ángulo.
A veces necesitamos algo imposible para revelar algo dolorosamente real.
El relato que da título al libro, Leyendas extraterrestres, nos introduce en el fascinante mundo de la especulación fantástica, cercano a la ciencia ficción.
La posibilidad de que seres procedentes de otro mundo visiten la Tierra es, en apariencia, una premisa clásica de la literatura fantástica.
Pero detrás de ella existe una pregunta mucho más antigua:
¿Qué ocurriría si de repente tuviéramos que enfrentarnos a algo completamente fuera de nuestra experiencia?
¿Sentiríamos curiosidad?
¿Miedo?
¿O interpretaríamos lo desconocido de acuerdo con nuestras propias limitaciones?
El segundo relato, El lugar de la cita, toma una dirección completamente diferente.
Aquí lo fantástico se relaciona con la culpa.
Un ser humano intenta escapar del remordimiento provocado por una misión que no cumplió debido a su propia cobardía.
El relato lleva ese sentimiento hasta un extremo casi surrealista.
Y quizás eso es precisamente lo inquietante: existen cosas de las que podemos huir, pero no necesariamente cosas de las que podamos escapar.
El tercer relato, Encuentro durante un viaje, resulta quizás el más intrigante desde el punto de vista literario.
Seghers imagina a Hoffmann, Gógol y Kafka reunidos en un café de Praga.
Conversan sobre sus encuentros con regímenes autoritarios y sobre sus respectivas obras literarias.
Nunca ocurrió.
Y precisamente porque nunca ocurrió, el relato se convierte en un espacio imaginario donde tres voces literarias muy diferentes pueden encontrarse.
Hay algo fascinante en esa idea.
La literatura puede crear conversaciones que la historia nunca permitió que ocurrieran.
Puede sentar alrededor de una misma mesa a personas de diferentes épocas y hacerlas dialogar sobre las cuestiones que conectan sus obras.
En este caso, lo fantástico no se limita a hablar de extraterrestres.
También se convierte en una manera de atravesar el tiempo.
Como es costumbre, quiero compartir una reflexión inspirada en el espíritu de la obra:
“A veces inventamos mundos más allá del nuestro porque el mundo que conocemos no basta para explicar lo que sentimos.”
Creo que esa idea encaja especialmente bien con Leyendas extraterrestres.
Los tres relatos son muy diferentes, pero comparten algo importante.
Utilizan lo extraordinario para examinar al ser humano.
Nuestro miedo a lo desconocido.
Nuestra culpa.
Nuestro valor y nuestra cobardía.
Nuestra relación con el poder.
Y nuestra necesidad de encontrarle un sentido al mundo que nos rodea.
Anna Seghers fue una de las escritoras alemanas más importantes del siglo XX.
Su trayectoria literaria estuvo profundamente marcada por las convulsiones políticas de Europa y por la experiencia del exilio.
La edición cubana también la presenta como una figura destacada de la vida literaria de la República Democrática Alemana, o RDA, donde desempeñó la presidencia de la Unión de Escritores.
La edición que tengo en mis manos fue publicada en Cuba por Arte y Literatura en 1982.
La redacción estuvo a cargo de Kvieta Sedlákova, la corrección fue realizada por Rafaela Rodríguez y Maritza Vázquez, y la cubierta corresponde a Carlos Rubido.
Las antiguas ediciones cubanas me resultan especialmente interesantes porque muchas veces acercaron a los lectores autores y obras internacionales que, de otro modo, habrían sido mucho más difíciles de encontrar.
Tener hoy este libro entre las manos significa no solo acercarse a Anna Seghers, sino también encontrarse con una pequeña parte de esa historia editorial.
Como en publicaciones anteriores, comparto fotos de mi ejemplar físico.
Y este libro merece especialmente ser fotografiado junto a sus páginas.
Es uno de esos volúmenes cuyo título despierta inmediatamente la curiosidad, pero cuyo contenido termina siendo mucho más amplio de lo que su nombre puede hacernos pensar.
Hay extraterrestres, sí.
Pero también hay culpa, conciencia, literatura, miedo, imaginación y una compleja relación entre los seres humanos y el poder.
Leer Leyendas extraterrestres hoy deja una impresión interesante.
Quizás lo más importante de la literatura fantástica no sea que nos aleje de la realidad.
A veces consigue exactamente lo contrario.
Nos devuelve a la realidad con otros ojos.
