It was already night when I noticed a small moth resting on the ceiling of my bedroom. It was one of those little encounters that can easily go unnoticed, but this time I decided to take a closer look.
I immediately reached for my phone. My first photographs were taken from a distance because I did not want to get too close and make it fly away. After getting a few shots, I decided to try the macro camera.
I slowly moved closer until the phone was only a few centimeters from the moth. At that distance, details that were barely noticeable from across the room became much easier to see. One of the things that caught my attention was the hairy-looking edge around its wings, which gave the insect a very different appearance when viewed through the camera.
I ended up taking six photographs. The moth remained on the ceiling long enough for me to get several views without disturbing it too much.
I later recorded the observation on iNaturalist, where it was identified as Diaphania indica, a species belonging to the family Crambidae. It is interesting how an insect that appears so ordinary at first can reveal many more details once we stop and look closely.
This was not an observation made during a walk or in a natural area. It happened right at home, in the middle of an ordinary night. Sometimes Nature Observers does not require going anywhere special. A small visitor can simply appear on the ceiling and give us a reason to take out the phone and pay attention.
