No pretenden dar respuestas,

O no suben.

Chronicles of the Absurd #01. The Line
Fuente Pixabay
Hello dear community @holos-lotus, I come once again to this community, on this occasion to begin an idea that has been going around in my head since I joined Hive. It is about creating a series of posts with a weekly sequence, at least at first. Its name will be:
Chronicles of the Absurd.
This is a series of chronicles about everyday life,
about those scenes that repeat themselves so often that they stop seeming strange to us.
Here there is no exaggeration or forced fiction.
The absurd is not invented, it is observed.
These are texts born from daily experience,
from waiting, from meaningless rules,
from gestures we all know
and almost never question.
They do not seek to give answers,
only to stop for a moment
and look carefully
at what we have learned to accept.
In this first edition the theme is:
The Line
In Cuba, the line is not a queue, it is an institution.
One does not arrive at a line, one inherits it. Upon arriving, one does not ask “who is the last?”, but rather “who is marking?”. And that is where the ritual begins. Someone raises a hand, points to an invisible number and says: “I’m marking for five.” Five people who are not there, but who will exist later, like a promise.
The line then becomes a sum of absences. There are more occupied spots than present bodies. Logic adapts quickly: it does not matter who is there, but who said they would be there.
At the bus stop that takes me to work, it almost always happens the same way. We arrive early, still with sleep stuck to our faces, and we start counting ourselves. One, two, three… until the one who marks for others appears. They mark for the wife, for the cousin, for the neighbor who is on the way, even for someone who does not even know if they will come. But they do it with conviction, like someone fulfilling a moral rule. They do not feel guilty. They are sure they are doing the right thing. And most people accept it.
When the bus appears, the line no longer exists as a line, but as a story. Each person has their own version of who goes first and why. Getting on becomes an exercise in collective memory: “I was here before”, “I marked”, “he arrived later”. No one is surprised. Everyone accepts it as part of the landscape.
The absurd reaches its most perfect form when someone boards first and, from the door, marks seats for others who are still at the end of the line. The gesture is natural, a hand extended, a brief phrase. Inside the bus, those seats already have owners even though the owners have not yet arrived. The bus moves forward full of places reserved for people who are not there.
I work in a hotel and transportation is divided by zones. In theory, each bus picks up only the workers from its zone. In practice, the driver decides. For the convenience of some, passengers who are not from that zone get on. No one protests too much. The driver knows them, or they know him. That is another way of marking.

Meanwhile, those who do belong to the zone ride standing up. Or they do not get on at all. The driver announces that the bus is full. He says it seriously, looking at an interior where seats are occupied by commitments, favors, and future presences.
The bus drives off. It leaves behind a stop full of people who made the correct line, who arrived early, who followed the official rule. Further on, before reaching the destination, the “borrowed” passengers get off. The bus continues almost empty. The scene repeats itself with a precision that is frightening: first full, then empty; first there is no space, then there is plenty.
At the stop, those who were left behind stare at the asphalt as if the answer were there. No one shouts. No one rebels. Someone says “tomorrow will be another day”, as if the problem were the calendar and not the system.
The line, in Cuba, is not just a way of organizing waiting. It is a school. It teaches how to negotiate injustice, how to normalize disorder, how to call “cleverness” what harms others. It teaches that marking for oneself is wrong, but marking for several is solidarity. That cutting in line is not cutting if it is done confidently.
In the end, the line moves, but not forward. It moves inward. It gets into our heads. It teaches us to accept the absurd with discipline, to survive in it, to repeat it tomorrow with the same conviction that we are doing the right thing.
Because in the line, as in many other things, what is truly strange is not what happens, but that it no longer seems strange to us.
And anyone who dares to protest and fight against this absurdity is definitely crazy, at least that is how others see them.
Up to here this first chronicle. Thank you for reading and I hope for comments about it. The images are from Pixabay and I used Google Translator for the English version.
