- CULPABLE.
- GUILTY. The jury had no compassion and without any regard passed sentence, one that made my heart practically stop after being so accelerated. The reaction of some was one of emotion, while a few, those close to me, felt desolation. And me, I felt as if I had been hit hard, so hard that I was totally helpless. What had happened? Hadn't my innocence been made clear in the face of the vile accusations that had been fired against me? That's what I thought, but obviously it wasn't enough, it never was. And my mind, stunned by the announcement no longer knew what to do. They were taking me somewhere else, surely to serve my sentence, but my mind had stayed in that courtroom, it kept wondering what had happened. I was unable to understand the reasons for that absurd decision, let alone that so many people had supported it. The evidence against me was not enough, that was clear from the beginning, and listening to my defense anyone would have decided in my favor. And then, what happened? My mind was only able to put aside these questions to repeat over and over again a single word, the one that filled the courtroom: GUILTY. I look around me as I am taken back to the cell that from now on, and possibly for the rest of my life, will be my home. It's hard to admit it but it's better to get used to the idea as soon as possible, maybe it's one of the things that will help me cope with this grief in the best way. I force my mind to leave behind what happened, I try to think of positive things but they have gone so far away, thousands of miles away. I find it impossible to think of the good things in life, especially after seeing what a great injustice has been done. Because, although no one has asked me after the trial, I continue to emphasize the fact that I am innocent, totally innocent. But that matters little now. Those around me only tell me that it could have been worse. And I ask myself what could be worse than being falsely accused, than being found guilty while being innocent and now, from now on, having to live deprived of the freedom I love so much, the one for which we would be capable of doing so many things in order to regain it. Maybe they mean that as long as I am still alive I will still have hope, and it is something positive that I can finally think about. I am still alive, I still have the strength to fight, even if today is the worst day of my life. After a few days I have been able to calmly analyze my situation and only one thing makes sense of my punishment, one that has clearly been undeserved. No one came to my defense, no one objected to my deprivation of liberty, much less anyone protested my sentence, and all because my skin color is different from theirs. That is the only "crime" I committed, to be born with a different skin tone, one that today condemns me to the immense loneliness of this prison. I will be able to scream, cry and look for many ways to vent this terrible feeling of frustration that punishes me mercilessly, but it will be of little use if the people who must impart justice do not set aside their prejudices. Perhaps my voice today will not be heard, perhaps there is little I can do, but I know that one day things will change, one day justice will be equal for all, that is my hope, the one that sustains me behind the bars of this prison.
