It was the third sunset that Pauline stood still contemplating the Eiffel Tower, its majesty made her think that there were no impossibilities. She was a very sweet young woman, her skin was a little tanned by the sun. She was wearing a simple dress and her hair was gathered in a leafy mane, adorned with a beautiful comb of inlaid shiny stones that she had inherited from her mother, no one knew of its existence, she thought so, she always carried it with her on the sly and she was wearing it just at that moment so as not to feel that she was out of tune with the high bourgeois women who frequented the place.

Pauline was very simple, she worked for Mr. Oliver, she was his trusted maid. He was a wealthy man, from an influential family, he was also well respected, his decisions were not questioned. He was kind and generous, and he treated Pauline with a special and condescending manner, many said he was in love with her.

Mr. Oliver lived in a luxurious property on the outskirts of the city, he had traveled to Paris for a few days, for business matters and decided to take his most faithful employee, Pauline, to serve him in whatever he requested and also, deep down, he wanted her to be distracted and know the latest developments in the city, of which there was so much talk. In the afternoons, he would give her a couple of hours off for her to go for a walk.

Pauline had found a real reason to be near the tower and it was also to be able to contemplate a young gentleman with a bohemian look, black beret and sad look who also contemplated her, for three days they coincided. The first day Pauline could feel his penetrating gaze that caressed the whole profile of her face, when she turned around, the young man did too and pretended not to be looking at her. On the second day, their gazes met for an instant and she felt that the world stopped and that everything was a natural paradise. On the third day, they pretended to see the tower but only saw each other out of the corner of their eyes and smiled.

The fourth day came and, Pauline, with decorum, turned her head, but she did not see him again, she looked out of the corner of her eye and it was only a number of people she cared little about. She waited without showing anxiety but her heart was disappointed at not being able to see what in only 3 days had become what she most wanted to contemplate every moment of her life.

On the seventh day, Oliver returned to the quiet of his home, of course, with Pauline at his side. She was quite melancholy, for she never saw the sad-looking young man again. For moments, she thought that she had only imagined it and preferred to believe that he did not exist in order to feel a little comfort.

A couple of months passed and Mr. Oliver's birthday arrived, he did not like to have parties or attend such celebrations, however, he had good friends and others who treated him for convenience, he received many gifts at the door of his house.

He asked his employees to take the packages to his studio and to leave him alone with Pauline so that she could help him open them. That day Mr. Oliver received very elegant silk handkerchiefs, expensive hats, books on philosophy and poetry and many other objects. They left the largest package for last, this one was from Étienne, a great friend of Mr. Oliver's, who also left him a note that read:

"I know how much you love art, painting and simplicity. The artist who created this one is not famous yet, but he is already starting to be highly acclaimed."

On discovering the painting Pauline realizes that it is her contemplating the Eiffel Tower, it is her hairstyle, it is her dress, it is her comb. It was her seen from behind, someone was watching her while she believed that the look she longed for the most had disappeared.

Mr. Oliver is immersed in eternal memories, the girl in the painting is wearing a comb in her hair, just like the one he gave years ago to his greatest love. A love that had to remain hidden due to class differences and social pressure.

Mr. Oliver and Pauline remained in the deepest silence, she remained immersed in a reverie in which she is more than the muse of a bohemian painter, she desired more than that, she desired his embraces, she desired his kisses.

Mr. Oliver decided to invite the artist home and introduce him to Pauline, he knew well what was going on, or at least he supposed so, and he felt that he owed so much to his daughter and that he should do something in honor of the one who was his greatest love.
