A gesture that seems so small has made me smile internally, outwardly too, today. I can say that my Saturday started off well and quite sweet.
I was riding the subway on my way to my sister's house, as it is the birthday of one of my favorite nephews. I was complaining, internally, about the vendors inside the subway, about people eating knick-knack inside the subway, that's not supposed to happen, many years ago it didn't happen, the rules were enforced, now they are not.
I don't know about other countries, but some years ago in Venezuela it was forbidden to eat inside the subway, now many do it and it is normal, but that is not what I want to talk about.
A man bought 10 candies from a street vendor. When the girl was going to give them to him, he told her to hand them out to each of the people sitting in front of him. It was a poem to see the faces of all those people, one lady blushed noticeably and everyone's countenance changed. There were 4 candies left and when the girl went to give them to the man, he said to finish handing them out and I was one of the lucky ones.
The girl told the gentleman that the purchase she had made was not enough for her own candy and that for that reason she was giving him one.
It was quite a nice moment, about 11 "thank yous" were heard and the atmosphere was sweetened, even for me.
I kept thinking a good part of the way through that gesture, even as I'm writing this, I smile still. It can be easy to give smiles and sweeten moments, sometimes, this gentleman proved it by giving what to some may not seem like much but it was a detail that charged the atmosphere with a pleasant energy.
It was inevitable not to think about moments of generosity or moments when some people simply give unexpected and unforeseen gifts, they brighten moments and sow good seeds that seem to have the effect of making some of us want to have similar gestures.
So, with the candy in my pocket I arrived at my sister's house and congratulated my handsome nephew with a big hug for his 21st birthday. It seems unbelievable that time goes by so fast, I remember clearly when many times I went to pick him up from elementary school, now he is so tall that he has the nerve to ask me if my height has shrunk, he doesn't seem to remember the same things I do.
It was a simple celebration, I spent a lot of time with my mother eating chicken soup and talking about how beautiful the moon was.
This Saturday I didn't do much, I feel that others did more and I was fortunate that they shared with me, of course at least I washed the dishes and pots.
I'm glad I was able to share with my nephew this day and I was able to bring him a gift, I'm sure he really liked it, most of the time I'm right in the gifts I give him, he and I have always had a special connection.
What did I give him? I assure you it wasn't the candy, I still have them with me. Tomorrow I have to work at a friend's bakery and I plan to give it to a customer....
Maybe I'll buy more to give as gifts.
Until the next time.
