It is a custom with rural people down south to turn up to the house of someone who has just lost a family member.
Ladies tend to show up with food: fried chicken, peas or beans, cakes, pies. Some show up with brooms, mops, vacuums and other cleaning supplies to touch up the main part of the house where people will tend to congregate.
Men tend to do yard work so the family won't have to do so in a time of need.
Sadly, it is a custom that is going away. People are more into themselves than their communities.
