Well my plans and hopes for the Palmer Lake 24 hour to be a really productive and rewarding effort didn't work out that well. Even though I started out well and had hopes to push myself for the whole 24 hours that only lasted for 3 hours and I finished up with only 50 km.
I was tired from the 2 days driving and I hadn't slept well so that didn't help. My hip and right leg was a bit tight but it wasn't really a bother at the start.
Conditions were very raw and foggy at the start but at least it wasn't rainy or frosty but I still was wearing cold weather gear to start.
I headed out at a relaxed 10 and a half minute pace on the relatively flat .8 mile loop. I had fueled myself with hot coffee with fats snd collagen and planned to eat 1 or 2 of my keto fudge bites every hour or so. I cruised through the first hour with just over 5.7 miles and things were going along fairly well.
Unfortunately my gut wasn't completely happy with my fueling plans as the heavy fatty fudge just didn't seem to sit well and my stomach never felt great. My fluid balance seemed good as I was peeing adequately and clear and the solid stuff wasn't giving me too much trouble.
As the fog and mist cleared I took of my light jacket and then my warm tights a little later and soon I was in my light running hat and Rabbit Boston shirt znd ultra shorts which was much more comfy for me.
After going through 3 hours at just over 17 miles I felt my initial excitement and drive begin to fade away. My feet were fine but the discomfort in my right hip znd leg had begun to bother me.. At that point I decided to wslk some miles to see how things would go. The fudge wasn't sitting well and I wasn't sure how well my carb/electrolytes drink was doing (I really need to analyze my hydration mix going forward).
My energy never improved and my run deteriorated into a power walk that I hoped "might" get better but it never did.
The scenery was beautiful once the sunny sky bathed the surrounding hills with wonderful light while keeping it nice and comfortable. I had abandoned my fatty fueled plan and just went to the generic aid station food that wasn't too great but kept me going for the next few hours.
As I headed towards 6 hours my pace was still around 5 mph which was fine but I felt like I was fighting a losing battle and decided to push to get to 50 km and call it a day after that and try to figure out what didn't go right today.
While my high hopes went up in smoke I did at least improve my total distance to 50 km and now I just need to regroup and train to improve in 2 months for the Fat Ox and Across the Years in December.
On a positive note my feet and legs weren't trashed from the miles today which means that I'll be able to get back to training sooner than later.
Tomorrow we're off to South Dakota for a couple days then back home. I'll be glad to get back home and really work on my diet and training and see what my potential is for 2023 - hopefully this 63 year old body still has great potential left.
Time for some much needed rest and recovery. Enjoy my Coros data if you're interested.
