Rain hammered the zinc roofs of Uyo as Emem stood under the eave of Ibom Plaza, watching okada after okada splash past. Her phone battery had died, and the last thing Joeboy said was, "I go pick you by five."
By six, she was soaked to the knee, cursing softly under her breath.
Then headlights swung round the corner — Joeboy's rickety Golf, wipers screeching like they owed him money.
"Sorry o," he said, leaning over to push the door open. "Traffic for Itu Road tie everywhere."
She climbed in, dripping onto his car seat without apology. "You almost make me trek go Ewet Housing."
"E no reach like that now." He grinned, easing into the road.
She hissed, but the corner of her mouth betrayed her.
Outside, harmattan dust mixed with rain, and inside, warmth quietly returned.
