The rate at which moral decadence is spreading in society today is truly alarming. It has eaten deep into every part of our lives, how we relate with others, how we speak, how we treat strangers, and even how we see ourselves. Things that were once shameful or clearly wrong are now seen as normal. Sadly, many now call it “civilization” or “freedom.” But when freedom loses discipline, it becomes dangerous.
In many homes today, couples are struggling, not because they don’t love each other, but because they don’t know how to manage their emotions. Emotional maturity is gradually disappearing. People are quick to react, slow to reflect, and even slower to take responsibility. This lack of control leads to broken homes, depression, violence, and other problems that affect not just the couple but the children and the society at large.
There’s also the pressure from work, the harsh economy, loneliness, and the constant noise on social media. We’re becoming numb to what is right. We are losing the very things that used to keep us grounded, values, patience, community support, and a strong sense of right and wrong. It’s heartbreaking to see.
One of the biggest problems today is the unhealthy love for money. Everyone wants to make money, which is not a bad thing in itself. But the lengths people go to get it is where the real issue lies. Integrity, hard work, and honesty are now seen as old-fashioned. People would rather cut corners, cheat, or steal just to appear rich. For many, the end now justifies the means, even if it means harming others.
It has gotten so bad that even secondary school students dream of driving luxury cars and living big, even though they do not have any legal source of income. Instead of guiding them, some parents praise and support them, especially when they benefit from the money. Society, too, is guilty. We support their businesses, give them titles, and celebrate them, never minding how they got the money. What message are we sending to the younger ones?
Today, material wealth has become the order of the day. People measure success only by what they see: flashy cars, big houses, designer clothes. No one asks questions anymore about the source of someone’s wealth. This has led to a rise in crimes like internet fraud, theft, rituals, and even killings. People now value money more than human life.
Until we return to core values like honesty, respect, patience, contentment, and genuine love for others, things will continue to get worse. We must stop glorifying wealth without questioning its source. We need to teach our children by example that true success is not just about what you have but how you got it and the lives you touched along the way.
