Timing as you can well imagine is something you nee a lot of practice with or simply have great luck with. This is especially true when it comes to photography and even more true when you are attempting to capturing a photo of a whale breaching.
A breaching whale doesn't really give you too much of sign that they are about to leap out of the water, which is exhilarating because it does shock and you awe you instantly. However, if you want a photo of that moment it can be a tad stressful, as you fumble with your camera in an attempt to take that shot.
Sometimes though, a whale will not only breach once but can breach 2, 3 or even 4 times in a row. If this behaviour occurs not only is it breathtaking to watch but it allows the rare opportunity to capture a breaching whale in the air! I do find myself a lot of the times now not even picking up my camera but just sitting back and being in the present moment in awe of this huge marine mammal.
