It's been sometime since my last gardening update, and Sunday felt like a great day to do it. I guess that kind of makes this a Sublime Sunday post, which I have never done before. I suppose you have to start somewhere! I started the day early before sunup and took some pictures, in retrospect waiting for brighter lighting might have been better, but oh well...
First off a rose bush on the neglected side of my house. It's the side I tend not to pay much attention to, so it's badly overgrown and needs trimming. However, I am behind on my tetanus shot so I have been avoiding it as those thorns pricks can carry tetanus.
And come nice purple flowers that bloom this time of year. It's a type of Aster, I think New England aster, but that's just a guess. They are pretty though!
Tomatoes
When I talk about a fistful of tomatoes, this is what I'm talking about. Yes, it's a bad reference to the old Clint Eastwood movie "A Fistful of Dollars", a true classic western! But just look at all those cherry tomatoes, come next week I'll be picking them by the fistful!
And a nice tomato plant on the side of the house, it's producing nicely but has bushed out. So you have to wade in to get the ripe tomatoes!
Some San Marzano variety Roma tomatoes here. I love these, the plants grow tall and don't bush out. They produce heavy loads and they taste awesome. Some of the best tomatoes I have ever planted! The next four pictures come from different plants, I have a lot planted in the yard. There is a good reason for that, they are delicious!
Peppers
I'm a big pepper lover. This year I only have jalapenos and shishito peppers growing. The jalapeno variety is called La Bomba II, I highly recommend it. Spicy with thick walls, and taste great. I don't recall the shishito hybrid variety, but they are more mild. Only one in ten peppers have any real heat. They are great served with garlic, ginger, and soy sauce once roasted on the grill. Also great when pickled!
Some shishitos:
Some jalapenos, one I've let get too ripe and has turned bright red. It's should pickle up nicely!
More shishitos, the plants are smaller and pain to bend over and harvest, but worth it!
Basil
I've got a couple basil plants that are new this year. They should produce throughout winter which will be nice!
Tomatillos
These are excellent in green salsa and making chili verde. The husks grow large and then the fruit slowly fills them in. You have to feel them every few days to know when they're ripe and pick them. I love these things, they even are great raw with a nice tangy taste. Take off the husk first though!
String Beans
These plants are planted yearly and have gone insane. I have to pick every couple days or they get to big to be used. They are great boiled up or even pickled. I love to make Dilly Bean, which is a way to pickle them up with garlic, peppers, and dill. After a few months of pickling they are nice, garlicy and spicy!
