Life always shows me that I don’t have the full picture and that if something doesn’t turn out the way I expected, it’s for the best.
Not every obstacle is a bad thing; sometimes it’s there to keep you from going down the wrong path.
Last year, I did everything I could to get my daughter into the Central University of Venezuela (UCV), but it didn’t work out—even though she had ranked 41st out of 40 available spots for her major, and one of her friends who did get a spot had told her she could have it because she didn’t plan on moving out of town.
Logically, I thought there wouldn’t be a problem—that the spot would go to my little girl. Who else? She was next on the list, after all.
We even traveled all the way to Caracas (more than 10 hours by bus from where we live). We knocked on every door we could, but we got nowhere.
“That’s not how it works,” was the response we received to our naive assumption. To me, there’s no clear explanation for this, but sometimes you just can’t fight the system.
Apparently, psychology has become one of the most sought-after majors in the country—even more so than medicine, which is only offered at public universities.
Many plans fell through; we were even thinking of moving to Caracas permanently.
I believe that if something doesn’t go as planned, it’s for a good reason. I have faith that God will always guide me down the best path.
My daughter and I were like a GPS when it says, “Recalculating…”
Fortunately, through our jobs, my husband and I have the benefit of having our children’s tuition paid, and the degree program she wants to pursue had been brought to our city just three semesters ago.
We enrolled her in that private institution—which isn’t the university she had hoped for (the best in the country)—but at least it’s the degree program of her dreams.
When I saw what happened in the capital region on June 24, my immediate thought was, “Thank God we’re in this town.” If we’d gotten a spot, we’d be right in the middle of the tragedy, going through an experience that would be very difficult to get over.
I’ll admit that my mind is very fragile, which is why I avoid exposing myself to the news. I’m like a child who closes their eyes so as not to see what upsets them. By the way, that’s something I do when I watch movies—I’ve never been able to overcome that fragility.
I had even planned to sell my house and buy an apartment in the capital, something I wouldn’t do now because I might lose it.
Now it’s my son who wants to study at the UCV; however, right now I’m thinking that if he gets accepted (which I’m sure he will, because the major he’s aiming for isn’t in high demand and his GPA is over 19/20), I’d rather rent out our current house and use that money to pay for another one in Caracas. I wouldn’t sell it to buy a new one anymore.
God is wisdom; I prefer to trust in Him and keep moving forward on the path He may clear for me.
Now my daughter and I have new plans, which we’ll keep to ourselves until we achieve them.
We need three years to carry them out—three years of preparation to make our dreams a reality.
If it’s meant to be, it will be given to us; if not, another plan will come to mind.
I think it’s wonderful to always live with a dream that motivates us to strive to achieve each of our goals.
Without action, no dream is worth anything, and successful people didn’t succeed on their first try—it was the result of many rounds of trial and error, without ever giving up.
Perseverance wins out.
And these are the thoughts I’d like to share with you today, my friends.
Every day offers us a blank canvas, ready for us to build our dreams, stroke by stroke.
To all of you, thank you for joining me on this journey through these words.
Thank you very much
