Don’t look at me while I go!!... to the cupboard to look for something to cook. I have been dreading winter since the first day of autumn. Admitted, Australian winters aren't that cold, but I prefer the humid tropical environments where life is buzzing, literally around your face and your butt sticks to the bus seat, ok maybe that bit's not the most favourable. Since that first day of autumn, I have been stocking up on cans of organic legumes here and there should I find myself in a shop that offers such delicacies.
Sometimes the perfect wintry meal to warm the cockles of your heart comes from a mish mash of cupboard stashes and garden produce. To make my undecided dish, I rummaged out a can of chickpeas, gathered my plethora of spices: sweet paprika, nutmeg, turmeric, cumin and fennel seeds and some hemp powder. Pulled out some veg from cold storage: pumpkin, sweet potato, carrot, celery and broccoli. Retrieved the staples of onions and garlic from their hessian home and topped it off with a couple juicy tomatoes and a bunch of curly kale from the garden.
My neighbour also returns her hearty meals with me every now and then. The simplicity of sharing what you've made with neighbours is one thing that has brought me so much gratitude lately. I’ve never experienced such selflessness from a neighbour before. We have different values and beliefs, but we can always come together over a warm gift.
The chickpea picture is part of a series I drew just having fun with compound words, for example: superstar, shot glass and butterfly. Consider doodling some fun pictures with compound words while you’re on hold next time, give it a whirl!
