I played a Splinterlands battle and started paying more attention to monsters that can avoid attacks instead of simply absorbing damage. Usually, when I choose a frontline monster, I look for high health and armor because I want something that can survive for several rounds. However, I am learning that there is another way to stay alive. Sometimes, avoiding an attack can be just as valuable as having enough health to withstand it.

One ability that caught my attention was Dodge. This ability gives a monster an additional chance to evade Melee and Ranged attacks. I find this interesting because it means an opponent’s attack does not always have to land, even when the attacking monster is strong. If the ability helps my monster avoid an important attack, it could survive longer and give the rest of my team more time to deal damage.

I started thinking about how useful this could be when facing an opponent with powerful physical attackers. A monster with high attack damage can become a serious threat, especially when it attacks repeatedly. However, if my defender can evade some of those attacks, the enemy may need more turns to eliminate it. Those extra turns could give my other monsters an opportunity to weaken the opposing lineup.

What I like about Dodge is that it changes the way I think about defence. Instead of relying only on health and armor, I can consider whether a monster has abilities that make attacks less likely to hit. A monster that avoids an attack takes no damage from that attack, which can be very helpful when the opponent is dealing heavy damage.

However, I also understand that Dodge is not a guarantee. My monster can still be hit, and I should never assume that it will avoid every attack. If I choose a card with low health and rely entirely on evasion, one successful enemy attack could eliminate it. I would rather combine Dodge with sensible positioning and a team that can provide enough damage and protection.

Another thing I considered was the difference between facing physical attackers and Magic attackers. Dodge helps against Melee and Ranged attacks, but it does not provide the same protection against Magic attacks. This means I need to think about the type of damage my opponent is likely to use. A monster that is useful against one lineup might be less effective against another.

I also began thinking about how speed can affect a monster’s ability to survive. In Splinterlands, speed influences the chance of attacks hitting, so a fast monster with Dodge can be particularly difficult for physical attackers to deal with. When the right conditions come together, the monster may become a frustrating target for the opposing team. Still, I need to remember that speed and Dodge do not make a monster invincible.

This has taught me that choosing a defender requires more thought than simply checking its health. I need to consider its abilities, the attacks it is likely to face, and how well it fits into the rest of my lineup. A monster that can avoid some attacks may be useful in one battle, while another monster with stronger defensive statistics might be the better option in a different situation.

I would also want to make sure my team has enough offensive power. Avoiding attacks is helpful, but it does not automatically defeat the opponent. My other monsters still need to deal damage and remove enemy threats. A good strategy should balance survival with the ability to finish the battle.

As I continue playing Splinterlands, I want to pay more attention to defensive abilities that work in different ways. Some monsters survive by having more health, others reduce incoming damage, and some can avoid attacks altogether. Understanding these differences helps me make better choices instead of selecting cards based only on their basic statistics. Every ability offers a different possibility, and learning how to use them is part of becoming a more thoughtful player.
