I got into Star Wars back in 1977 when the first movie came out. I did not have any of the toys back then, but there seem to be so many available now. Lego have a huge range of related kits. Some of them are pretty big and really expensive. One of those is the Super Star Destroyer that is about 125cm long. According to the instructions the actual spacecraft would be 19km long! For Christmas I got the slightly smaller version with a mere 630 parts.
I built this over a few evenings, but you could probably do it all in a couple of hours. I like to enjoy the process rather than rushing it. You do need to follow the instructions carefully to avoid mistakes.
The kit comes in six bags and this was after two of those. You can see there is a lot of colour inside, but you do not see much of this in the finished item apart from the little clear blue parts. The rest is just a couple of shades of grey. In the instructions they talk about some 'dark side secrets', but I would not say it is that exciting.
I often build on a baking tray to reduce the chances of losing parts. There were quite a few spares on this model, but they were all small pieces.
Eventually you add the outer fuselage that hides all that colour. It all fits together nicely and is quite robust.
Last year I had this diorama. People seem to struggle with what to buy me, so I have suggested Lego and they know I like Star Wars.
These belong to my son who has inherited my love of this franchise. He is running out of room to display them. He does have some others, and not all based on Star Wars.
He got these two for Christmas. His girlfriend bought the Millennium Falcon. That is a huge kit and should take quite a while to build and she will probably help him. Chewbacca should be an interesting one too.
I am not rushing to get a lot more of these models, but they are a nice little diversion.
