#AlternativeWeekend is a tag started by slobberchops@slobberchops to feature 'alternative' music, however you want to interpret that. For me it's music outside the mainstream that you hear on the radio every day.

I don't expect you have heard of John Bassett, but he's a very prolific musician based in Ireland. He has produced music under a variety of names. His music is all on the cool Bandcamp service and I've bought lots of it.

KingBathmat - Abintra

I think I heard this band on some of the prog podcasts I used to listen to. They have a load of albums and I haven't heard them all yet. One of the joys of Bandcamp is that you can generally listen to the music in full before you decide to buy and often you can choose what to pay. I often buy these as downloads, but sometimes get a CD.

Arcade Messiah - Your best line of defence is obscurity

His next project I was aware of was Arcade Messiah that was instrumental rock. I really liked this and have all three albums, one as a signed CD.

John Bassett - Break the wall

This was a more mainstream effort with some lovely songs. There's also an EP where he recorded in a barn with just an acoustic guitar.

Sacred Ape - Season of the damned

This is his latest project. I've not listened to much of this yet, but I'll be checking it out soon.

It's amazing how much music one person can produce and his quality is great. I know I've been pushing Bandcamp a lot, but there's just so much good music on there. The artists get most of the money.

As always

Pump up the volume, PLAY IT LOUD!

I'm Steve, the geeky guitarist.
