In early spring I bought a bunch of Strawberry roots and put them into containers and pots. I used some oil coconut oil containers and cut holes in them so the plants would grow out. They have been growing in these containers for about six months now and they have really filled out the containers. Maybe a little too much. It seems like they are planted too close together and it is causing the fruits not to form properly.
I think this is because the roots do not have the space to move around and are touching each other. Because of this the fruits will start to form and then stop and drop off. Not good.
The containers tend to dry out easily as well, which is not good for Strawberries. They want water every day and with these holes in the sides of the containers they lose water moisture too fast. Maybe if I had large 5 gallon buckets theres enough soil to retain moisture. But with these little 1 gallon containers I think theres not enough soil to do this.
The ropes are holding up nicely. I was worried my knots would fail and cause the containers to fall out of the harnesses I made for them. But that has not been the case. The biggest problems is these plants are not producing like the other potted Strawberry plants. Making me think they need more space.
Since the making of this video, I have taken down these containers and transplanted the Strawberries into a large pot. I really had to move them as the coconut oil 1 gallon containers were starting to deform and crack. Probably from all the holes I put in them and then hung them in a daisy chain. This put alot of load on the top bucket and it shows by caving in on its self.
Its been fun having these hanging containers, but they are just too small for so many strawberry plants. If there were not structural issues with the containers I may have just plucked some out to give the remaining plants more space. But I figured these little containers are going to collapse one day so better to move them now than when I find them all on the ground.
