When I saw it flying around I thought it was a hornet.. being pretty big and all black with white markings I kept my distance. After taking some pictures I looked up "black wasp with white bands" and the search engine came back with as a Potter Wasp. These bugs make homes out of mud in a simular way to how Mud Daubers make mud homes on the side of structures.
This wasp can sting and from what I've read a sting from a female can hurt like a hornet sting. So dont want to feel that again. But overall they spend their time looking for caterpillars to bring into their nests to feed the larva they lay.
I read they also collect pollen but they did not seem interested in the homes I built. It went on with its day flying over to a bush I presume to look for bugs to capture.
