YELLOW PAPER WASP // Capturing the Beauty of a Yellow Paper Wasp Through Macro Photography
Good night to all my beloved hive friends 鉂わ笍
Let me introduce you to a yellow paper wasp from the Vespidae family. This particular wasp has a very unique shape, with an elongated body and an extremely narrow, slender waist, making its abdomen and thorax appear almost completely separated. It has been quite a long time since I last came across this wasp, whether because my living area is not its natural habitat or because its population has become quite small. However, today this wasp came to my home garden on its own, arriving uninvited while bringing along such extraordinary beauty.
I don't know whether this particular wasp lives in colonies or leads a solitary life, but I always find it alone, without any others around. Alright, now let's explore the uniqueness of this wasp, starting with its colors and shape, all the way to every interesting characteristic it possesses.
I managed to capture the beauty of this wasp when it landed on a wildflower. We can see that this wasp is predominantly bright yellow with black markings, along with reddish-brown coloring on its antennae, legs, and waist. What catches my attention the most is the extremely narrow, long, slender, and curved front section of its abdomen, which connects the thorax to the rear part of its abdomen. Its swollen abdomen also has clearly defined segments, ending in a sharp, pointed tip, and this is where its stinger is located.
Until now, I still don't know where they build their nests or what their nests look like. They are quite rarely seen, and even when I manage to find one, I am not always successful in photographing it. However, from some of the photos above, we can see that this wasp loves visiting flowers to collect nectar as a source of food. According to the information I have gathered, this particular wasp is also a natural predator that can prey on various types of small insects and plant pests. Therefore, its presence is very beneficial, especially for farmers, as it can help control insect pest populations.
Now, take a look at this wasp from the front.
Just look at how handsome he is.!
From a close distance, we can also clearly see the shape of its antennae, which are long and curved at the tips. Their functions are also similar to those of many other flying insects, serving as natural sensors and tactile organs.
This wasp looks quite terrifying when we see it from the side, but its appearance looks very cute and adorable when viewed from the front. We can clearly see its two jet-black compound eyes and its two red antennae, which contrast beautifully with the bright yellow color of its face.
I also just noticed that this wasp has striking red mandibles shaped like protruding knife blades pointing downward .
In my opinion, this is a very shy wasp, as it tends to avoid direct contact when encountering humans. However, we should never disturb it or make it feel threatened, because this particular wasp has a venomous sting that can cause intense pain and severe swelling.
