A few days ago I downloaded the best books in Spanish according to the New York Times to check which one interested me and start reading it. I looked up the synopsis of one of the first ones I had downloaded, just out of curiosity, and it grabbed me immediately. On this website, I found the following description, about the book "Look at Him", by Russian writer Anna Starobinets:

"In 2012, Anna Starobinets discovered, on a routine visit to the doctor, that the child she was expecting had a birth defect incompatible with life. What starts out as the chronicle of a pregnancy gone wrong, ends up turning into a true horror story. "

For some reason I thought this was a science fiction book, that is, the chronicle of the spawn of some demon or terrifying being... then I was hit head on with the truth, there is nothing more terrifying than a painful and grim story, which has actually happened to someone in real life. This story could well be considered a diary or journal.

This story could well be considered a diary or an account of everything a woman had to go through since she found out that the child she is carrying in her womb has a genetic malformation, the decisions she had to make and the repercussions this situation brought to her and her family. From the beginning, the author points out that the real names of the people and institutions that played a role in this episode of her life are kept in the writing with the purpose of making visible the painful performance of many doctors and institutions, full of rules, formalities and bureaucracy, but lacking in human touch and empathy. All this, in her own country, Russia.

The author and protagonist narrates her pain, uncertainty, guilt and discomfort. She feels lonely and miserable, compares herself to "future mommies" pregnant with babies without malformations, and suffers without the necessary medical and psychological support. This book tells of a dark side of pregnancy that many women experience, that of loss, grief, anger, sadness and mourning. The stigmas associated with abortion, medicine and religion, hell and absurd beliefs.

There is no reason why you should be in Pain".

Luckily, at some point in the book and thanks to the decisions the mother makes, there is a change of narrative, all is not lost, suffering can still be avoided, as much as possible, for the mother and the baby. This is captured in one of my favorite sentences in the book "There is no reason why you should be in Pain". Anna was able to choose, in spite of everything, but it puzzles me to think of all those women who have no choice.

From this book I am left with a deeper understanding of "being a mom", and my role in society, with science and technology to back it up, but tied to the reality and humanity that should characterize any interpersonal exchange. Also, the weight of words, which are often spoken lightly without even thinking about how they might affect the other.

It seems to me that when you read a life story like this one, as a reader, it is not that you may or may not like the story, precisely because it is someone's story, it is not the creation of a text for entertainment. But in any case it is worth noting that it is a very well written book, with an incredible insight into the psyche of the protagonist, from the beginning to the end.

"Look at him" is a story about reconciliation with loss, acceptance, life-death dualism, the human mind, avoidable and unavoidable pain, family support and psychological support.

I liked this book very much, so much so that I finished it all in one day, and it is about 4 hours of reading. It is worth it, I highly recommend it!
