This was a tough week for me at work. It was full of demands, deadlines and delays that ended up pushing back my agenda and schedule. When I am overworked I feel the stress in my body. These last few weeks my skin and stomach have been affected. My atopic dermatitis flares up during the most stressful times, which creates more stress for me. It's ironic, because a couple of days ago was World Mental Health Day. Unfortunately, the current reality is not so kind to these internal factors, so we have to manage to take care of ourselves.
I am always very productive, I love to be busy, doing things and with a full agenda. From within I sometimes put a lot of pressure on myself about what I have to do, how much money I have to save, future plans and goals. I am so self-demanding that when I start having a lot of demands, reminders and external "to-dos" it is very easy for me to collapse. With time, and applying some strategies, I have learned to manage internal and external demands, but I won't deny that it doesn't feel good to feel that time goes by too fast and that I don't have enough time to do everything I would like to do. In such cases, I have had to work until dawn.
In times of extreme stress at work, my days are divided into work and sleep (it's the only kind of rest I can afford). I don't have time to exercise, watch a movie, or have long conversations with my loved ones, just work and sleep. It works for me to have a "healthy" style most of the time, and that week when I know I will be full of things at work, I don't commit to anyone (not even myself), I don't show up anywhere, I don't usually do anything, just focus 100% on finishing that thing I have pending. It works for me, because I concentrate all the stress in one moment of the month and the rest of the time, even if I am overloaded with work, I am aware that it is good for me to exercise, for example, and I try to do it, several times a week.
This week sucked up so much of my energy that, even though I finally turned in my work on time, I feel like I don't feel like celebrating, or resting. My brain went into automatic mode and thinks I should keep working until dawn without stopping. Luckily, I think it's something that will last me only a few days. The good thing is that I already feel VERY relieved, and that's a big step forward. Next Monday is a holiday and I plan to really rest, something I haven't been able to do lately.....
