I greet you again, on this Thursday, February 16, 2023. Today I have returned to share one of the books that have helped me a little to learn about Natural Medicine; although I am not a specialist in the area of Health, and I think that the diagnosis of pathologies that affect human beings, as well as their treatment, should be managed by professionals in the area; I also believe that Natural Medicine is an invaluable tool to manage our health, both at a preventive, curative and even palliative level, and additionally a synergy can be established between allopathic and natural treatments, in such a way that they enhance each other.

Throughout my entire existence, I have observed how people use plants and substances to alleviate certain ailments. From a tea to a poultice, I could see since I was little that they offered a healing alternative. I learned this from my paternal grandmother and also from my mother. My paternal grandmother was very particular: she always drank water from a container, a clay pitcher filled with water that rested on top of another plate (clay too), and she drank with a "totuma" which is a kind of cup that is taken out from the fruit of a tree called “totumo” (Crescentia cujete), and she did this because she said that the water was healthier and tastier, that it would protect her from diseases. She knew of many herbal concoctions that relieved everything from a stomachache to a fever, and usually when making these concoctions, she prayed to them because she said they would be more effective that way.

My mother, for her part, knew formulas that she had learned from her mother, that is, from my maternal grandmother. For example, drinking an infusion of chamomile relieves intestinal colic, drinking a fig leaf tea soothes your cough, rubbing orange blossom essence on the stomach of a newborn baby, cures stomach colic in the baby; however, mom favored allopathic medicine, which is not bad, but natural medicine must not be lost sight of.

For this reason, I have always liked talking to older people and peasants, because they have a lot of knowledge related to natural medicine. The former, the elderly, have been accumulating it throughout their existence, and the latter, the peasants, have learned it because it is part of their lifestyle, and it is ancestral wisdom that has not yet faded into oblivion. This has made it possible for me to know the properties of some plants and substances, although in all honesty I consider my knowledge to be very modest, since there are millions of plant species that I do not know and that I will never know, because they do not grow where I live, and others, even though they grow in my country, I know I won't have a chance to see them all. To give you an example: The thousands of plant species that grow in the Amazon are relatively close to me, but it will be difficult for me to go there to learn 100% about this natural medicine.

Other way of learning is through specialized literature, whether they are printed books (which are used less every day, unfortunately), or Internet pages. And today I have brought you precisely a book that talks about natural medicine. Although it is not a book that I turn to frequently, reading it allowed me to learn interesting aspects of the functioning of the digestive system, and certain premises that must be considered when applying natural medicine to this area of the human body. It is about: New Treatments with Plants for Digestive Disorders, by the author Frank Roberts, who was an English herbalist, a work that was later translated into Spanish.

This book came into my possession many years ago, from the library of my maternal grandfather (well, he was really my uncle, but I called him grandfather), who had many and varied books there (he was an avid reader and a autodidact). This edition corresponds to the first to be published in Spanish, and although the book came out in English in 1978, its first translated edition is from 1980, it has been around for 43 years, hahahaha, a lifetime. However, if we look at its back cover, it has a label with the data of the importer and with a Retail Price (P.V.P.) of 21.00 bolivars at the time, which is equivalent to 4.88 US dollars (see reference at the end of this post), which was an affordable price. If we look inside the book, it was purchased at the SEARS Bookstore, in Bello Monte, in Caracas, and if we look carefully, we can see the phone number that this commercial establishment had at that time. , of only 6 numbers. Currently the telephone numbers in my country are 7 digits and SEARS stores no longer exist in Venezuela.

Now, this book uses many plants that do not exist in tropical areas, which is why not all of its formulas are viable for this part of the world; but it offers important data on the physiology of the digestive system, the various pathologies that can affect it, among others.

There are important pieces of advice like the one in the photograph that I share below, which says: “If you are constipated, do not take laxatives; if you have diarrhea, don't take astringents”, which demonstrates the author's respect for the innate wisdom of the human body.
