Afternoon everyone....

What a gorgeous day out here in the Northeast today. After three straight days of crazy gusty wind, and one day of torrential down pours. We have finally broken through to the other side.

It’s currently just over 50 degrees here . But it’s going to climb up to the low 60’s by around 2pm. There is not a cloud in the sky and there is no wind for once.

Today is #silverpornsaturday, but I have a very old vintage and fairly rare silver round to show you today.

The round I am about to show you is almost as old as me. The round is an International Universal World Trade Unit. These are the original trade units that were minted. They were accepted globally in trade for goods. As you will see on the obverse the word silver is written in five languages. Also on the obverse is the date and purity in two different ways 99.9% pure and .999. It has a great design of both sides of the globe to show all of the continents.

On the reverse the first thing you will see is the scale which is balanced. This is to show its equal value. Next you can read the words “The International Trade Unit”. Then you see the weight in three different measurements. One Troy ounce, 31.1 grams and 480 grains.

I don’t have my book of silver rounds with me currently. It was lent to a friend who is trying to look up his collection of rounds. But if I remember correctly there were on 5,000 of these rounds produced.

Between the Hunt Brothers 1980’s historic silver price and the market crash of 2011, when the price of silver nearly hit $50 an ounce. How many of these do you think survived the smelter?

While there is no actual way to know, there are fair estimates from experts that put the survival rate at roughly 10-15%. That means there’s most likely between 500-750 of these left on the planet. And I own one, and it is an absolutely impeccable example as well.
