Hello, music lovers! 🎵
It's a Tuesday, so it's time for #threetunetuesday and a chance to share something I'm listening to.
My last post here was two weeks ago, and continuing with the music, I'm recalling memories from the past with you.
I recall the British band Ultravox today.
They began playing in 1974 as a new wave band called Tiger Lily and changed their name to Ultravox in 1976 before signing a major label deal. Between 1980 and 1986, they had seven top-ten albums on the UK charts and released several successful singles.
As previously mentioned, the band initially started as a new-wave group with a glam rock sound. However, with the addition of new singer Midge Ure, they transitioned to a more electronic sound. From their third album onwards, they are regarded as synthpop classics.
Their music prominently featured synthesizers, guitars, and dramatic vocals, often exploring themes of loneliness, alienation, and technological advancement.

I have chosen a few songs that, in my opinion, best represent the band.
Ultravox - Dangerous Rhytm
Dangerous Rhythm is from their debut album Ultravox! from 1977. It was written when they were still called Tiger Lily. The whole album has a glam rock feel, probably because of the time it was written and that Brian Eno, who was still a member of Roxy Music, helped with the production.
It's also interesting because it's different from the others, played in the reggae style that was starting to spread around the island at the time, along with punk. Otherwise, this first album didn't bring any commercial success.
Ultravox - Vienna
This song is from their fourth album, 1980, with the same title. It is also the first album with a new singer, Midge Ure, who completely reversed their music style, introducing more synthesizers and other electronic instruments and turning more towards pop music.
Music critics were skeptical, but the album achieved considerable commercial success in the US, where it was presented as an authentic European mix of German Kraftwerk and Can with a touch of British new wave. Later, when the term synthpop was coined, this album is considered one of the classics of the style.
Ultravox - The Voice
The song The Voice is from their fifth album, 1981's Rage in Eden. The album continued their electronic synthpop, which is already more complex than on their previous albums. It reached number four in the UK album charts and was a considerable commercial success.
The song has a melancholic and somber mood and is about the search for meaning, connection, loneliness, and isolation. It has been used in numerous films and TV shows and has seen several adaptations.
And a bonus, their biggest commercial hit and a performance at the 1985 Live Aid festival in London, Wembley Stadium, in front of 72,000 people.
