TTT - Morphine

Hello music lovers! 🎡

It's time for #threetunetuesday and a chance to share something I'm listening to.
My last post here was a week ago, and continuing with the music, I'm recalling memories from the past with you.

Today I remember a band from the 90s, Morphine, which, just like bands in my previous posts (The God Machine, Modern Lovers, New Model Army), brought excitement and something new to me and my youth music friends, so that we were always following it.

But last week YT offered me one new compilation of the best live recordings, Morphine - The Best Of (1992-1995) full live album and I'm still listening to it.

Morphine was an American trio from Cambridge, Massachusetts, formed in 1989. They were well-known in the United States, especially at universities and on local independent radios, but were not commercially successful. They were, however, quite popular in underground music circles in Europe, where they performed extensively.
From 1990 to 1995 they toured extensively, until the sudden death of frontman Mark Sandman, who died on stage, during a concert, in Palestrina, Italy, on 3 July 1995, of a heart attack. Well, then the band broke up. I'm very sorry that I didn't get to see this band live.

Morphine's music was very unique and unusual. The combination of rock with blues and jazz elements, with drums, saxophone, and double bass guitar made by Sandman and beat poetry, sounded and still sounds, after so many years, perfect and timeless. As a band, they have released five albums, eleven singles, and two compilations.

For those of you who are not (yet) familiar with #threetunetuesday or #ttt - these are tags you need to set when you post.
It's a music initiative started by @ablaze, and with his words, the jist is as follows:

Every Tuesday I'm going to share 3 songs that I like to listen to and I invite your feedback in the comments below. Better still, why not have a blast of your own Three Tune Tuesday and mention me in the post and I'll come and find the post and upvote it. If you could also use #threetunetuesday tag that would be great, as that is what I use when sifting through all the entries every Wednesday. It'll be a sweet way for us all to discover new music. You'll also be in with a chance of winning the reward.

So, to continue with the music, I've picked out a few clips.

Morphine - Thursday

The song Thursday is from the second album Cure for Pain from 1993, it was also released as a single. I chose it as the first one because it most clearly shows the original sound of the trio, the jazzy drumming, the double bass humming combined with the baritone saxophone choruses, and of course the lyric of Sandman singing about a typical Thursday, with a couple of beers and a game of pool, and then with a girlfriend from someone else, things get complicated...

Morphine - The Saddest Song

The song is from their debut album Good from 1992. The album has been recognized by music critics as an outstanding product with an alternative and unique sound leaning towards jazz. It was not well received by the public, at least in the US, but in the meantime, they received many offers to play from Europe and Russia.
The Saddest Song is a melodic and melancholic love ballad, and a reflection on a love that is never forgotten and returns with memories in dreams.

Morphine - Super Sex

The song Super Sex is from their third album Yes from 1995. I added the video because of their minimalist sound, which still sounds full, where at times we see the two-string slide bass guitar of Sandman and saxophonist Colley with two saxophones at the same time.

And live recording, for a bonus :)

Morphine - Cure For Pain
The song of the same name from the second album in 1993. The recording was posted on YT twelve years ago, I have no information where it was recorded.
Dana Colley, saxophone player:

The point of the song is to show the double standard during the β€œWar On Drugs”.

That's all for today, thank you for your attention. I hope today's selection was interesting and put you in a relaxed mood like it did me :)

This is my 34th post for #threetunetuesday, which was started by @ablaze. I hope what I'm sharing is interesting for others too, because then it makes sense.
