Hello, there! saydie@saydie here, playing Splinterlands everyday!

Game Modifiers in Splinterlands change the winning conditions of every battle by limiting the cards you can use, giving different abilities or debilitations, inflicting damage on units, and more. Depending on which rulesets are at play can dramatically influence which cards players use, as they have to adapt their tactics on the fly so they can win the battle. So, it is not an exaggeration to say that Game Modifiers can sometimes pose more of a threat than your opponent.

A couple of seasons ago, I went on this journey of looking for rulesets that were seemingly removed from the circulation of ranked battles, and now, I can confidently say that Silenced Archons is no longer a ruleset players can encounter in their battles.

Including the recently added game modifier, Splinterlands now has a total of 82 Game Modifiers. This is if we include all the seasonal rulesets as well as all the inactive ones. As you all know, game modifiers are a vital part of the game, as it changes the conditions that could affect the result of every battle. Which is why it is important to know about these rulesets.

And along my search for these rulesets, I found out that not a single time did I have a battle where Silenced Archons ruleset, previously known as Silenced Summoners, was available, whether it was on Modern, Survival, Brawls, or even on Tournaments.

Silenced Archons

Archons give no stat buffs or debuffs and neither grant nor use abilities.

Archons are a key part of Splinterlands gameplay. Without them to summon your units, you can not enter any battle, regardless of how many units you have in your collection. It also serves as a ceiling that will cap the level and abilities of the units you will use. So, as much as possible, players always prioritize leveling their Archons first before other cards. At the same time, many Archons can provide stat buffs or debuffs as well as grant abilities, whether it is on an ally unit or the opponent, which can significantly boost the cards. So whenever it is possible, selecting Archons with abilities over those that don't is the best choice.

But why even have Archons with no abilities, you ask?

Usually, this type of Archon has a much lower mana cost, so they are best to use in little leagues, or when the battle has a significantly low mana cap, and of course, when Silenced Archons is active, because you can instead use the mana you saved by using low mana cost Archons to summon better units than it just going wasted by an Archon who has its abilities restricted. But now that the Silenced Archons were removed from the rotation, the Archons with no abilities now have their utility further reduced. In modern, the most affected were the Rebellion common Archons.

Because of the ruleset removed from circulation, five Archons now have much less utility than ever. Even though a feature of these Archons that should make them more appealing to use over other Archons of the same mana cost is their ability to summon units from two elements. But now, that is gone, because if we look at the Escalation Archons that also have a 3 mana cost to use, not only do they have Bloodlines Dominion that allows them to summon with the same Bloodline, but they also can give abilities/debilitations on other cards through tactics, given you cannot use legendary Archons during Fallen Legends ruleset.

Closing

So I think it was really a shame when Silenced Archons were suddenly removed from the ruleset circulation, as it reduced the utility of some Rebellion Archons. I think that the team should at least wait until the Rebellion set has moved to Wild before they take this action. I also do not know how often other Archons in Wild format without abilities were being utilized right now without the Silenced Archon ruleset, but I bet it was pretty low.

Thank you, and see you on the next post!
