It is true that in the course of the year, people may have offended you and of course, you may have also stepped on the toes of others. You should not bear the offence and cross over to the new year - you need to forgive. Forgiveness does not mean that you might even accept the person as your close ally nor become friends with them, but it means that you have put yourself above the offences. You need to let go of anything that will weigh you down and cause a breakdown in your emotions. When you learn to let go, then you have mastered a very important aspect of your life, and you have found a true enlightenment.

I remember a time, about a couple of years back, when someone I never expected did something I could not have imagined. I felt very sad about it and was disappointed that someone like that can do something like that to me. It created this kind of feeling of offence within me, and to make it worse, the person was still claiming right at her actions and never cared to apologise. This was already drawing close to the year and I needed to clear the burden off my chest and not to carry the weight of the unforgiveness into the new year. When I made up my mind to forgive, I felt a kind of peace within my heart that is inexplicable but adorable.

With all what is happening around that world that could easily weigh anyone down, carrying an extra burden of unforgiveness is just an error. Do not allow what someone has done or their offences to make you to punish yourself with unforgiveness. This is because unforgiveness is like an act of oneself punishing their own self for what they did not do. This is why you need to learn how to let go and to forgive. You cannot determine when offences will come or from who it will come from, but what you have is a choice to forgive.

It is worthy to note that the forgiveness you give to someone is actually yourself that you have indirectly given it to. When you forgive, your mind becomes more at peace. Of course, you will agree with me that you are the direct beneficiary of the inner peace which you achieve through forgiveness. As you wrap up the year and getting set to enter the new year, you have to lay aside all forms of offences. The truth is that there may be very valid reasons why you may want to pick offence, but for the sake of your sanity and the peace of your mind, you can choose to let go. For every reason why you need bear grudge, there are even more reasons why you need to forgive.

You have offended people in the time past and they forgave you. You see one of the reasons to forgive. Saying that you are without offence or wishing for offences not to come is simple a futile expectation of perfection from humans. However, when you forgive, you should not provide the offender the platform to keep offending you over and again. For example; if you stay with them or go around them and you always end up being offended by them, then it is for your good to stay clear. After all, you are not under any form of obligation or a strict mandate to be friends with the person.

You should not give room for people to keep offending you, or provide them with liberty to control your emotions by their offences. If someone offends you and you harbour unforgiveness in your heart, that means you have given the person right over your emotions and your life. But when you forgive, you prove that you are not only the bigger person, but of a better personality than the person that offended you. Always have in mind that in the face of provocation or offences, your reaction is not a function of what the person did nor of who the person is, but a result of who you really are. You can choose to forgive, not because of the person in question, but because you need peace of mind.
