There are lots of people who have the mantle of leadership on them in various areas of life - from their offices, to their organisation, to family, meetings, etc. However, one should know that there are some things that a good leader should know in order for the leadership to be worthwhile. More so, leadership is not necessary about occupying a position but what to do with the position. Here we shall take a look at some qualities and features that is required for a good leader to possess for effectiveness in fulfilling their leadership requirements.

The first one is that you need to be a person of clarity and vision. There is a reason you are placed in the leadership position - to drive the organisation forward and to make others do the right thing. You need to define your expectations; what to do and not to do, the results to expect over time, etc. All these will enable you to be more effective and efficient as a leader. If you do not define your vision and goal, and if you do not know what to stand for, then you will not know the strategies to employ to go about it, and not only will you not fulfil your goals but you may fall for anything. So you need to clearly define your expectations and goals as a leader.

The next point is to devise a way to carry your followers along by motivating them to succeed, not through force or coercion. It will be better that people do something because they are motivated to do it, rather than they are forced to do it through fear. The willingness to follow you is what makes your leadership effective. Anytime you feel the need to force people to obey or to follow you, then you are beginning to lose your leadership position. It should be something that should flow normally and naturally, not what you get on coercion. Know that if you want people to obey and follow you, then you have to earn it, not enforce it. People will be more piqued to do something that has a reward than something that has punishment for not doing it.

The next leadership feature that is required for a good leader in order to lead well is good communication skills. You have to sharpen your skills of relating and communicating with people. You do not just use words, speak or write simply because you feel you can do it. You have to put the emotions of the person receiving it into consideration. When you speak, do your words cause havoc or do they create peace? It is not by using hurtful words that you show you are the head. Some people will be too quick to misrepresent straightforwardness to mean strictness, and rudeness, so they will talk to people anyhow. Trust me, you do not need to demean people with your words to prove that you are a leader. Rather, by communicating effectively, your leadership will be more worthy.

Another important quality that a true leader should exhibit is honesty and integrity. If as a leader and people remark you for being dishonest, people will not want to follow you. But if they know you as someone that is honest and will stand by the side of the truth, people will not have difficulty in following you. In fact, it is better you stand by the truth and for what is right even if it means that you are going to stand alone. You may not see the need to be honest at the immediate but in the long run, you will see the numerous benefits. So as a leader, honesty should be your nature. When you say a "yes" let it be an honest and true "yes." Same with when you say no.

The final quality that we shall look at about a good leader is that they should be willing to adapt to changes, which is also a result of continuous learning. If what you are doing now is exactly what you did decades ago in the same format without updating or upgrading anything, then you are not growing. As a leader, you need to bring in new innovations, adapt to the new trends and adjust positively to changes.
