Darkness cannot overcome gross darkness, it is only light that can overcome any type of darkness. A wrong cannot overcome another wrong, it is only a right that can overcome a wrong. Hatred cannot overcome another hatred, it takes the power of love to overcome hatred. In the same way, offenses cannot overcome offenses, you need forgiveness to overcome offenses.

The person that has lost his ability to forgive people's offenses has also lost his abilities to love humanity. The truth is, no matter how hard you try, you cannot stop offenses from coming your way, so you need to be always armed with forgiveness.
It is important to know that no matter how bad someone is, there is still a measure of good in them. In the same way, there may be a measure of "bad" in the very best of humans. Understanding this concept will make you not to be quick to lay up offenses against someone in your heart.
It is not in the interest of the person that offends you that you should forgive them, but it is in your best interest. Forgiveness does not mark their wrong as right but it makes you to live above their offenses.
Forgiveness is not a gift or something you inherit. I mean, no one is gifted with the extra ability to forgive - it is a conscious choice you have to make and continue to make.
However, it is almost practically impossible for effective forgiveness to be done without love. I'm talking about the kind of forgiveness that does not recall past deeds, this requires love and courage. This is because, forgiveness is not a function of the lips but has its root in the heart.
It is your acts of forgiveness that proves your strength, because forgiveness is not reserved for the weak at heart. You need inner strength to forgive.
Note this: For you to forgive others, you must first learn to forgive yourself. This is because, you can only give to others what you possess. If you do not possess self-forgiveness, how do you hope to forgive others?
