As I’ve said many times, the beach is a very relaxing place for me, which is why I go back as often as possible and explore different spots. I enjoy seeing places I’ve visited before from new perspectives; in this case, I returned to Quetepe, but instead of staying in the area associated with the beach resort, I walked toward the west side.
The community of Quetepe is unique in that very modest homes—typical of fishermen—coexist alongside very luxurious residences. On the western side of the beach, far from the main entrance, there’s another tourist-friendly stretch of shore, and the most curious thing about this is that this part of the beach is the best because there are no rocks, no seaweed, and no mud—in other words, it’s the best place to enjoy yourself, unlike the resort area, where going into the water isn’t very pleasant.
Living on the beach must be a pleasant experience—at least that’s how it seems to me—which is why I see how happy people are living in makeshift homes; a roof is all they need to shelter from the sun and rain while they rest. It seems like logical reasoning, since fishermen tend to spend much of their lives at sea.
The perspectives of tourists and those who live here are very different: those who can’t enjoy the sea every day try to live each hour to the fullest, while the locals seem relaxed, as if time were passing very slowly. For tourists, sunset signals that it’s time to head back—just when the horizon offers the most beautiful view—but that view is reserved for those who can watch the day fade away without a care in the world.
