Tonight, a close friend of mine gave me some nasi kulah—he had attended a Maulid celebration and brought the rice to my house after I got off work. It came with all the complete accompaniments, so I can't wait to mix it all together and enjoy the meal.
Nasib is rice wrapped in a banana leaf into a conical, triangular shape. Before wrapping, the banana leaf is first wilted—meaning it is briefly held over a stove flame—to make it pliable and resistant to tearing; this process also imparts a wonderfully fragrant aroma to the rice.
This is part of the menu that I photographed. Actually, there is one more menu, namely meatball soup which is still being heated on the stove. My mother deliberately heated it for me so that it doesn't go bad easily.
And immediately I opened the package of sugar rice and then I added various side dishes that my friend gave me.
This is a serving of nasi gula (rice with curry-style gravy) to which I’ve added several side dishes: free-range chicken cooked in Acehnese curry, a duck egg in meatball soup, and spicy stir-fried chicken liver.
This is the perfect meal for when I get home from work feeling hungry. I had been looking forward to it so much—I couldn't wait to enjoy it. As it turned out, the person bringing it called to let me know they had delivered it straight to my house and handed it to my mother, since I wasn't home and was still at the office.
Honestly, he is my best friend; whenever he hosts an event at his home, he never forgets me, and likewise, whenever I host an event at my place, I make sure not to forget to include him as well.
I immediately bit into the free-range chicken. Actually, I really like free-range chicken cooked like this and when I celebrated Maulid yesterday, I didn't have time to cook this Acehnese curry free-range chicken, and when I went to Maulid to my friend's house, there wasn't any free-range chicken either. Look at the very big free-range chicken and it really made me want to eat it straight away.
The chicken curry gravy is incredibly rich; eating my rice with this Acehnese free-range chicken curry is absolutely delicious—it is truly the perfect pairing.
In our community, nasi kulah is a truly distinctive feature of certain occasions—particularly the observance of the Prophet's Birthday (Maulid) and the seventh-month pregnancy celebration. While the seventh-month milestone is often marked by lavish parties elsewhere, in our area, the husband's family brings nasi kulah—a tradition eagerly anticipated by expectant mothers.
There were also salted duck eggs and the meatball broth; the meatballs themselves were huge and had a great, springy texture—I really enjoyed them. The broth was spot-on, and I loved its savory flavor; my friend has always been a talented cook.
I devoured it spoonful by spoonful—every last bit. She is truly skilled at cooking, having inherited the talent from her mother, who used to run a food stall selling various rice dishes she prepared herself.
And I am so grateful to you—you truly are my best friend. Thank you for giving me this food to enjoy at home.
Thank you 🙂🤗
