While it is true that living on Isla Margarita is a kind of blessing because it is a paradisiacal place and we have beautiful beaches that both residents and visitors enjoy, for those of us who live on the island they are not only a source of fun and enjoyment but also of income.
In my case I live in a fishing village where the hotel sector also makes a living.
In El Tirano, a small town on Margarita Island, located by the sea, we can see in action two of the most important economic sectors of our island, such as the hotel industry and fishing.
There is a beach that bears the same name and I have beautiful memories of it from my childhood, every year we came on vacation to the island and this was one of the beaches where my aunt ventured to go with a group of twelve nephews approximately. Today I am lucky to live in this paradise.
Today with my family we decided to go to the beach, since my husband is at home because he works all week, so after breakfast we went to our date with the sea.
Playa El Tirano is really close to us. A few blocks and we are there. My kids LOVE going to the beach so when it comes to distraction that is one of the first options on the list.
One of the things I like about this beach is that it's not too crowded. I don't like having people everywhere, let alone the sea being full of people. I prefer to go to quieter beaches and although this one is close to two hotels we have found a little place that is always alone.
Today in particular was a special day (for me hahaha) because I could see in action the fishermen of the town who every morning go out to work.
My kids immediately went into the water and I immediately got my hands on the camera haha. I walked to where the boats were for the artisanal fishing that is practiced in much of the island.
At that time (9:00am) most of them had already left. In fact they leave long before sunrise, so at that time I could only see a few boats on the shore and a fisherman working on his fishing gear.
Around 11:00 am we began to see boats returning to shore on the horizon. During the time we were there, four boats had already returned.
This same scenario can be seen every morning. The fisherman have no rest, as they work not only to sell their product but also to feed their families, so if you come to El Tirano in the morning hours you will always see them on the move.
Upon returning from watching the arrival of the boats I find another task that is very common on our island and that just seeing it makes me nervous.
Two men in full task were climbing the palm trees to bring down the tender coconuts, which are used in all the beach restaurants of the island and in many places that we find along and wide of our roads as the cocada.
A drink made with coconut meat and water, accompanied with milk and sometimes condensed milk.
I find this job extremely dangerous, but very entertaining to watch haha. One of the men climbed the palm tree while the other waited below to help him lower the bunch of coconuts with a mechanism that they put together themselves composed of a rope that is placed in the top of the palm tree by the man who climbs up.
It's amazing the skill and strength they have to use to climb up to the top without falling! I wasn't worried about them because they are experts at what they do but it's still a little scary to see them so high up maneuvering a sharp machete!
They were working for about three hours taking a short break every now and then and ended up with a good amount of coconuts which they loaded into a van to take them to their destination.
They were so kind that they not only allowed me to take pictures but even gave me a coconut hahaha.
My children? Still in the sea with my husband enjoying the waves and I continued my tour, because just a few meters from where I was you could see the awnings and umbrellas of the two hotels that are in our small fishing village, so I decided to go take a look.
As we are in holiday season there was quite a lot of movement, which is very nice to see, since our island lives from tourism and many years ago that sector like others saw its activity diminished, so being able to see so many people enjoying the beautiful beaches and the sun is really a blessing.
Margarita used to be a tourist destination for nationals and foreigners and those of us who live here dream that its golden times will shine again with as much or even more brilliance than before.
We are a small dot in the world but full of hard-working people who put their face every day to get ahead and become what we once were.
Today, even though it was a fun family outing, I came away with a plus of happiness because I was able to see first hand an important part of our state from different windows.
The fishermen at work, the "coqueros" at work and the hotel activists at work, organizing activities on the shore of our beautiful Caribbean Sea for their guests.
