My grandmother never learned what geometry is, but an arepa in her round hands would come out " says the popular song by Gualberto Ibarreto and I can attest to that!
And my maternal grandmother had a special hand for food, from arepas, perfectly round, to coffee with milk, like everything she cooked for us when we came on vacation, everything, absolutely everything was delicious!
Hi guys!!! What a pleasure to pass me once again by this little house that every day is more beautiful to join the beautiful initiative of #Hivedamor and put my bit to help the grandparents of the Asilo de Ancianos Santo Domingo. So I will take the opportunity to tell you a little about my grandmother Rosa, since it was with her that I had the joy of living with the longest.
My maternal grandmother's name was Rosa Pino and as you can see, I owe my name to her. In fact my two names are those of my grandmothers. Rosa, for my grandmother on my mother's side and Leonor for my paternal grandmother, whose name was Leonor del Jesus Blandin.
Of my paternal grandmother the only memory I have is quite sad and I think it marked me so much that it made me forget everything I could keep of her in my memory and the only image I have of her is of the day of her funeral.
I was really little when my grandmother passed away, I don't think I was five years old yet, but in spite of that I remember exactly where her coffin was located and asking one of my older cousins to carry me to see her.
So the only memory I have of her is the one I would least like to remember. I think that is why I completely refuse to see people after they have passed away. The only exception has been in the case of my father.
Of my grandmother "Mita " as everyone called her, I know that she was a very strong and hardworking woman, completely dedicated to the care of her children, who were not few! She had fourteen, of which my father was the oldest.
A woman of strong character, although loving with her children, she suffered constantly from asthmatic crises that were the cause of her departure and as I was one of the youngest granddaughters, I did not have the opportunity to meet her and share with her.
With my grandmother Rosa it was the opposite. I had the joy of enjoying her until she was ninety years old and although during my childhood years we didn't live in Margarita, we came every vacation. So it was quite a lot of time that I shared with her, besides she often traveled to our house.
I can say that she was a country woman. One of those who are not afraid of work and with a big heart. I remember her always doing something, very active, until a fall made her unable to walk.
She raised five children on her own and had two jobs to which I accompanied her every time she came on vacation. The morning job was a vegetable stand that she set up in front of the house of one of her sisters, a block and a half away from hers.
So from very early in the morning in the house you could hear the bustle of her in the kitchen preparing coffee to prepare everything she needed to leave on time for work.
Her house in the mornings was a revolution. Many people would come to share a cup of coffee with rum very early in the morning and of course I would wake up with the laughter and commotion of the visitors.
Once they left, we had breakfast always accompanied by that coffee with milk that only she had so delicious and we would get ready to go with her to her vegetable stand and while she organized everything, the cousins would try their luck to see who would ride on the cart haha.
The morning went by watching her chopping and weighing vegetables; chatting animatedly with her customers and with my mother who always accompanied her, while the younger ones played with the cousins who lived at Aunt Lina's house, my grandmother's sister.
At eleven o'clock she would start preparing everything to go back home and prepare lunch, as I told you above, she was very good in the kitchen.
What I remember most about her food was the chicken soup, the perico, the salted fish and her arepitas, which were the glory! Thin, round, super soft and toasted, ufff, just with butter they were a delight.
In the afternoon when the sun went down it was time to accompany her to her second job which consisted of selling clothes house to house. She sold sheets and different clothes that she offered to regular customers, so in the afternoons she would either go to collect or to offer and deliver merchandise.
I remember we would walk and along the way we would talk a little bit about everything, holding hands. She carried a notebook to write down what she delivered and what she was owed, but my grandmother couldn't read or write, so her clients were the ones who wrote it down!
I, who was always attentive to everything, would tell her how I was sure that they would put the price that was and she would tell me that you had to trust people and of course, those were different times or maybe she remembered exactly what she delivered. Who knows, haha. The truth is that she never had a problem with that.
If you ask me what is the first thing that comes to my mind when you talk about my grandmother Rosa, I would say the smell of tobacco haha. She loved to smoke that and watching her put it together was something I loved. So I associate that smell with her.
In fact when she would visit us in Güiria, in our house and she would leave, I would find a little bit of tobacco everywhere and just smelling it would take me all the way to Margarita.
Already at the age of thirteen we moved to the island so I was much more time with her and although we did not live in the same house ours was quite close, so every afternoon she came to visit us. I still remember her voice at the door "Leoooo " (that's what they call me in my family) with an accent all her own.
There is an anecdote that I will never forget about my grandmother, which has to do with arepas by the way. The thing was that one day she asked me to buy corn flour to prepare dinner and as soon as I entered the kitchen and saw the brand I brought her, she immediately ordered me to change it, because my grandmother hated "Juana" flour, but how was I supposed to know that, hahaha.
Of course I changed it for the "Pan" flour which was the one she liked and I never forgot it again! In fact it's the reason why I NEVER buy "Juana" flour, if she didn't like it for something hahaha.
With the years of course health weakens and every day that passed she required more and more care but we always did it among family members who were close to her, so she lived in our house for a while and then they were in charge of enabling hers to be at home as she wished.
We never thought of leaving her in a care home because we had the possibility to take care of her but I know that in many cases there is no other option due to time, work and even economic reasons, so I am not against it if there is no other option but without abandonment. That is to say, visit, take care and give affection whenever possible.
In our case, both my grandmother and my father and I organized ourselves to take care of them until their last days, so they said goodbye full of love.
As you can see there were many experiences with the popular Rosa Pino of El Tirano! I could spend hours telling the many stories and memories I have with my grandmother but I would need many posts hahaha.
The truth is that my grandmother Rosa always had, has and will always have a special place in my heart.
Thank you for joining me in this post full of love, nostalgia and wonderful memories. Kisses and blessings!
Besitos y bendiciones!
