Many times in our daily lives we forget that there are pairs of little eyes that, even if we don't notice it, are constantly looking at us and they do it so deeply that they treasure every single thing they see!
Hello dear friends, I hope you are enjoying an excellent weekend in the company of your loved ones and that you are in a positive mood to start a new week hand in hand with God.
As for me, this weekend will be a weekend of rest because the week was quite busy around here and my husband's absence is felt very much because while I am doing one thing he is doing another and we can get through everything without much difficulty but having to take care of everything is a bit complicated, especially with the school issue that this week was strong! Miranda who is only in third grade had a lot of activities and Matias who is in 6th grade as I told you is seeing the binary and quinary system! It was a challenge for me hahaha, I had to study because his dad was in charge of explaining to him and since his trip was unexpected I was not prepared but he plays, right? So we studied quinary and binary system! Thank God for Friday we finished all the pending activities and we are ready to enjoy a nice weekend at home.
And as part of that today morning we were watching TV together after breakfast and a scene from the movie made my thoughts wander away from what we were watching and I started thinking about how important it is to be aware of what we do and talk about in front of our children. Many times we say phrases like "he's little and doesn't realize it" or the so common "he's not aware of that, he's in his own world" and there is nothing further from reality than that kind of statements. Those little eyes are watching EVERYTHING! Yes, that's right daddies, the slightest gesture is perceived, processed and stored in a place reserved to file their behavior patterns, those that will guide them in the future, and they not only look at us, they listen to us! And with that in mind the question arises, "am I aware of this, am I taking care of the way I act in front of my children??
Unfortunately I must say that it is not always like that, because it is not easy to achieve that kind of self-control, many times we miss a comment, a word, an inappropriate expression, many times we argue in front of them without stopping to think that they are receiving all that information and that much of what they see and hear can mark their lives forever. But it is not easy to always be aware of what to say and do. I think it is something that we must create, like a habit, and it is not a very easy exercise to do but it is very important that we manage to implement it because what they can see or hear will be recorded forever and surely put into practice in the not too distant future. Proof of that is Miranda! She talks like me and even moves like me! Sometimes I hear her giving orders or arguing something and I look at myself in a mirror and that kind of thing always leads me to reflection, I realize that it is not something in the future, no no, it is already! They see, copy and apply and all of that will definitely influence their life both now and in the future.
So what can we do? Be attentive to what we say and do! It is easy to say but it is not and in a way it feels like losing some freedom, right? because we must be "taking care " at all times of our actions and also stop doing many things we used to do before, but since we are parents there is another person or persons (as in my case) who depend on us, and yes, we lose some "freedom ", but guess what? It's part of parenthood! Especially the first years of our children's lives and it really is not easy to achieve that kind of self-control and the truth is I don't know if it is achieved at all but the attempt CAN be made for the well being of our children, their emotional stability and development are worth any sacrifice we can make.
As I mentioned above, maybe if we treat it as a habit we can achieve good results and as parents we know that creating habits implies constancy and supervision. It is like when we try to get our child used to brushing his teeth at a certain time for example. What do we do? We remind them daily at the same time to brush their teeth and supervise them to do it and after a while, if we are constant, we don't have to repeat it anymore because our child will have acquired the habit of doing it. It is a work of patience and dedication and we do it because we know it is important for our child. So as parents we must use this same strategy to learn to control ourselves and prevent our children from seeing and hearing things they should not. We have to have our "alarm " constantly on and be able to stop when that alarm tells us that we are doing or saying something inappropriate in front of the children, which over time will be much easier to control and as in everything will depend on the effort we put into it.
But the problem arises when we are overcome by our emotions! How do we sound that alarm if we are upset or upset about something. I remember many times coming home from work super angry about some incident that happened with a co-worker and telling my husband what happened without taking into account that the children were there listening to everything and without taking into consideration that in many occasions they went to my office and shared with these people and that talking in a negative way in front of them was something totally inappropriate. talking negatively in front of them was totally inappropriate because regardless of their age and even though children don't usually hold grudges they are hearing that this person did something "bad " to their mom and that will definitely make them change in a way their way of looking at it based on something that happened to me. And as I say, being upset doesn't allow us to realize things and the alarm doesn't go off that makes us stop, and then it happens! Our son, the one who is right next to us "pending on something else " sets it off for you! And with his little childish voice he tells us "mommy he is a villain" and then that alarm goes off and we stop in our tracks and we realize that the child was not so distracted, was he?
This is something very common and usually happens in any environment, many times we argue with our partner without realizing that the child who is sitting playing at the table and we swear he is not listening to us, is doing it and yes, he is! And not only is he listening to us, he is recording everything that happens around him at that moment. That child notices how we express ourselves to others, clearly perceives the rage and anger in our voice, details our body language and copies! It copies everything we do and say. That child when we go on a "mommy" outing hears how we talk bad about his daddy and others. That child is not only playing next to us, that child is listening to everything and we have no idea of the great damage we do to him. And when we are aware of that, that day we will be much more aware of sounding the alarm and stopping to see where the children are before speaking or acting. Let's not wait for them to sound the alarm!
We have heard countless times that children are like sponges, but sometimes we forget that and simply continue to act as when we did not have that pair of little eyes and ears very attentive to everything we do and say. And while there are many things we must take care of in front of them there are some for me that are extremely important and of which we must be very attentive to sound the alarm immediately. These would be:
Let's remember that we are a role model and example for our children, we are their stability, we are their day to day life, their safe place. If there is someone they look at and listen to with special attention, it is mom and dad, since their first years of life in most cases are spent with us, so we are their first teachers, hence the importance of taking care of what we do and say in front of them. The way we treat each other, the things we say to each other and how we say them must be watched very carefully, since our little ones are "copying " and are storing in their files the way a family develops and those patterns will accompany them later in their future relationships and that is where it is extremely important to sound the alarm in time.
Parents who treat each other with respect, collaborate and love each other, who never argue would be ideal, right? But let's be clear, this is not always the reality, it would be idealizing a couple's relationship. Dad and mom have disagreements, dad and mom sometimes argue and it is normal in any relationship as long as of course we do not reach the point of disrespect and abuse, either physical or verbal, which is unacceptable, at least for me. Anyway, the reality is that it's not always a rose-colored love story like a soap opera, but it is very important that when we express our disagreement with a situation we are aware of the presence of our children. Many times the discussions get louder and we end up raising our voices and shouting that produce in our children firstly fear and insecurity and secondly a negative pattern. And as I said, disagreements are normal, the way we handle them is what we must take care of, especially if the children are present.
Talking bad about mom or dad to other people (when our children are present) and even to our children directly is something we should avoid at all costs! The only thing we are achieving with that is that the figure that our child should admire and respect loses authority in their eyes thanks to the words we say many times without thinking and under moments of annoyance and anger. It often happens that we get together with a friend and start telling each other everything and why deny it! Husbands are always a topic of conversation, some problem we had or some complaint we talk about with that friend as soon as she gets in the car and with our children in the back seat we start to let out toads and snakes about their dad. And no friends, the child is not distracted and much less deaf, he listens to everything.
It is at these moments that prudence must come in and we must sound the alarm and stop. At some point during the outing there will be time to let off steam, but we must be very careful that our children are not present. Let's take care of the image they form of their father or mother. Let's remember that this father must correct, discipline and teach together with us, and if we constantly discredit him, what do you think will happen! In my case my husband is usually very absent-minded and more than once I have heard phrases like "I don't know where his head is, he is never aware of anything" and more than once I have had to Miranda the alert because when Jose forgets something she repeats my words "daddy I don't know where his head is" so we must always be attentive to how we express ourselves about the other in front of the children.
Gossiping, critical and gossiping parents are going to raise gossiping, critical and gossiping children, we can be sure of that. If we have the habit at lunchtime or at any time with our children to speak ill of others or make some kind of inappropriate comment in front of our children, it's time to sound the alarm and stop! A little above I told you about my experience when I came home from work overwhelmed and didn't realize my son was there and I said a thousand and one things about my co-worker and my surprise was when Matias intervened and said that he was a villain! Imagine my surprise when I heard that from my son! I had to sit down with him and explain that I was angry about something that happened and that I did not express myself correctly. That yes, I was upset but that didn't justify me talking that way about that person. So that's another thing that for me is worthy of sounding the alarm bells and looking around me before I speak.
And all this is not about hiding our emotions, but about knowing how to handle them in front of our children. Of course! Mom and dad have problems, with each other and with others but we must know how to behave when they are present, there is a place and a time for everything and definitely ranting about others even our own partner in front of our children is neither the right place nor the right time because the damage that is caused is very difficult to repair. So be very careful with this! And I include myself in the warning because I am what we call here a "phosphorite " and for little or nothing I usually get angry and Troy burns haha. So I have to sound my own alarms and many times I have had to hear them from the least desirable place...my children.
Thank you for reading me daddies, have a great day!
Kisses and blessings
Besitos y bendiciones
