Cuba is a rolling museum; that has always been said, and now I'll explain why. In the 1950s, and even before, Cuba's relationship with the United States was very close. Because of this proximity, it was the most logical choice for the importation of automobiles. Therefore, it was very common for the most modern models to arrive in Cuba at the same time as in their country of origin, and even before. Thus, the island was plagued with cars of the latest generation for the time, which entered the country through ferries and other ships that docked daily in Cuban ports.
In December 1959, a socialist revolution triumphed and later evolved into a communist regime. As a consequence of the political conflicts and other events, the United States broke off relations with Cuba, which provoked the departure of many Cubans and Americans living on the island. They left behind all those modern vehicles that, until then, were driving around the streets of the country.
Sixty-six years of communism later, Cuba is a country lacking many modernities, where owning a car is an extraordinary luxury. The owners of these old cars have had to manage to keep them running without receiving any help in terms of maintenance, repair and replacement of parts, since they all came from the United States. Just as the government has been unable to provide resources for these vehicles, citizens have shown an incredible ability to innovate and create all kinds of adaptations to keep them running. Today, all of these cars are over 60 years old.
That is why it is very common to see these "rolling dinosaurs" on the streets of Cuba. Some are beautiful, others are extravagant, but they all have the charm of the resilience of the Cuban people, who cling to these time machines that remind us of the golden age of the Cuban automobile industry.

Cuba es un museo rodante; siempre se ha dicho eso, y ahora les explico por qu茅. En la d茅cada de los 50, e incluso antes, la relaci贸n de Cuba con los Estados Unidos era muy cercana. Debido a esta proximidad, era la opci贸n m谩s l贸gica para la importaci贸n de autom贸viles. Por ello, era muy frecuente que los modelos m谩s modernos llegaran a Cuba al mismo tiempo que a su pa铆s de origen, e incluso antes. As铆, la isla estaba plagada de autos de 煤ltima generaci贸n para la 茅poca, los cuales entraban al pa铆s a trav茅s de ferris y otros barcos que atracaban diariamente en los puertos cubanos.
En diciembre de 1959, triunfa una revoluci贸n socialista que luego evoluciona hacia un r茅gimen comunista. Como consecuencia de los conflictos pol铆ticos y otros acontecimientos, los Estados Unidos rompen relaciones con Cuba, lo que provoca la salida de much铆simos cubanos y norteamericanos que viv铆an en la isla. Dejaron atr谩s todos esos modernos veh铆culos que, hasta entonces, recorr铆an flamantes las calles de todo el pa铆s.
Sesenta y seis a帽os de comunismo despu茅s, Cuba es un pa铆s carente de muchas modernidades, donde tener un veh铆culo propio es un lujo extraordinario. Los due帽os de estos autos antiguos han tenido que ingeni谩rselas para mantenerlos funcionando sin recibir ninguna ayuda en cuanto a mantenimiento, reparaci贸n y recambio de piezas, ya que todas proven铆an de los Estados Unidos. As铆 como el gobierno ha sido incapaz de proveer recursos para estos veh铆culos, los ciudadanos han demostrado una incre铆ble capacidad para innovar y crear todo tipo de adaptaciones con tal de mantenerlos en marcha. Hoy en d铆a, todos estos autos superan los 60 a帽os de antig眉edad.
Por eso, es muy frecuente ver en las calles de Cuba estos "dinosaurios rodantes". Algunos son bellos, otros resultan extravagantes, pero todos tienen el encanto de la resiliencia del pueblo cubano, que se aferra a estas m谩quinas del tiempo que nos recuerdan la 茅poca dorada de la automovil铆stica cubana.
