🦉 The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)
📚 Dendrocopos Greek: dendron tree, coptō to hit, beat
📚 major (lat.) large
This species of woodpecker is the most common, most numerous and frequently encountered. It can be found in any forest. I met this friend in these photos in a coniferous forest far outside the city.
It was October, and in cold times, woodpeckers, if they cannot find insects or their larvae under the bark, eat plant seeds.
Especially love the seeds from the cones. To do this, they gouge a special hole in the tree, called the "forge". After that, the cone is plucked from the tree and inserted into it. You can see it in the photo. So it is convenient for them to get the seeds of their cones.
