🦉 The willow tit (Poecile montanus)
- Poecile poikilis (Greek) an unidentified small bird mentioned in ancient texts
- montanus (lat .) : mōns, montis mountain, mountain range, montanus mountain
In early May, I went to a nearby forest—right in the middle of the bird breeding season—and spotted this tit. As you can see, it is already gathering building materials for a nest. They build their nests in tree hollows—typically old, abandoned woodpecker holes or various natural openings, such as crevices in decaying trees.
In the spring and summer, it feeds on insects and spiders. In the autumn and winter, it switches to a plant-based diet, such as seeds and nuts. It also frequently visits bird feeders.
