🦉 The rustic bunting (Emberiza rustica)
- Emberiza embritz (Old German) bunting
- rustica rusticus (lat.) rural, country
This bird is listed in the regional Red Book as a rare and protected species. Indeed, I only ever encounter small flocks of these birds in the spring, when they are passing through on their return from their wintering grounds.
As you might guess, the males are more brightly and contrastingly colored than the females. When the birds are on the ground amidst old, thawed-out leaves, they are incredibly difficult to spot, thanks to their camouflaging coloration.
