🦉 The common whitethroat or greater whitethroat (Curruca communis)

  • Curruca is an unidentified bird name mentioned in the poems of the ancient Roman poet Juvenal
  • communis (lat.) ordinary, common.

This bird arrives in late April, once the snow has melted and insects have appeared. These birds are easy to spot; they inhabit shrubbery, so that is where you should look for them—regardless of whether the bushes are growing along the coast, in a mixed forest, or out in the fields.

Although this bird allows you to observe it, it strictly limits the distance. If you encroach upon the space it considers comfortable, it will let you know by letting out a hoarse, screeching cry.
The bird’s song consists of a series of rapid, short whistles, performed by the male from a prominent, exposed perch.
