🦉 The European pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca)
📚 Ficedula fi cedulinus (medieval lat.): “A small bird that feeds on figs and turns into a black-headed warbler in winter ”(from: Jobling, 2010)
📚 hypoleuca hypoleucos Greek: hypo below, a little, leukos white, hypoleukos whitish
The most interesting thing about these birds is the coloration of males, which has several gradations.
In the most contrasting variant, the top is black, with a white spot on the forehead, the bottom is white. Males of the lightest color almost do not differ from females, have an upper part from neutral gray to brownish-brown, a white spot on the forehead is small or absent. Between these two extreme types there are intermediate variants, and these color morphs are not associated with age.
These flycatchers arrive around the period of leafing on the trees, or sometimes earlier. inhabit forests of various types, as well as parks and squares.
The most important thing is that there are hollows, various crevices in trees, or birdhouses.
