🦉 The common chaffinch or simply the chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs)

For me, the arrival of spring begins when I walk past a forest, grove, or other habitat of these birds, and I hear the mating songs of the males.

These are among the first birds to arrive after winter. There's still snow on the ground, but the sun is as warm as spring.

Males arrive first, and if you look hard enough, you can even spot them in groups, just as they're arriving. At this point, they don't sing yet, but very rarely, you can hear what's known as a subsong.

This bird species is a "tournament" species, meaning it exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism. Males are brightly colored, with a variety of patterns. Females are brown and similar in color to the sparrows we are familiar with. They arrive later than the males.
