馃 The common chaffinch or simply the chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs)

  • fringilla (lat.) - finch; fi nco (Old German), fi nc (Old English)
  • coelebs coelebs (lat.) - single, idle, unmarried

These birds are among the first to arrive after winter. This happens around late March, though mostly in early April; naturally, it all depends on the weather, and their arrival can be delayed until the end of April if the weather is terrible.

Of course, you can track their arrival using monitoring services like iNaturalist, but I prefer to do it myself. There is an old cemetery near my home鈥攍iterally 200 meters away鈥攁nd every year, when I go out for a walk, I stop by and listen. Hearing the calls and songs of these birds always brings me joy; it means spring has arrived, even though snow and deep drifts still cover the ground.
