The ruff (Calidris pugnax)
In the middle of autumn, when our city river becomes shallow, you can see various sandpipes on its stones. These birds appear here from year to year, because through this route lies their way to warm countries where they fly to winter.
I saw them from the top of the shore, and going down I started looking for a way to them, because everywhere there was mud, water and slippery stones. After traveling a long way, I was able to approach them, but the distance to them was big. However, after a while, having examined the stones, they flew closer to me, and began to look for insects in the stones and mud. They were not afraid of me, apparently they knew that I would not be able to approach them because of the water and other obstacles.
In general, it all looked like a kind of rest, a forced stop on the route to eat, rest, put the feathers in order.
