🦉 The common chaffinch or simply the chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs)

  • fringilla (lat.) - finch; fi nco (Old German), fi nc (Old English)
  • coelebs coelebs (lat.) - single, idle, unmarried

These forest singers are among the first to arrive after winter. There may still be snow and the air may be chilly, but the males are already there, searching for their territory and beginning to sing.

It's no coincidence that I specifically mentioned males, as females arrive a few days later.
Birds can be polygamous; one male can, for example, share two families, have two females, and care for them all.
